Manx Rumpies?

I wonder if they have a lethal gene like the araucanas and tufts. The fertility can be an issue with both breeds also. If the Manx Rumpies don't have a lethal gene, I'd go for them

Hmm, I'm thinking of ordering from Sandhill anyway...

If you're interested in them, you should go for it! I love my two mixes, they're fantastic layers and very beautiful and interesting birds. I really enjoy having them in my flock, and it's great to know that they're so rare! How cool.

There is a link on Feathersite , an SPPA article by dr mcGraw . Sounds like a landrace breed which means a bit of variation in type and a wild variety of colors. Says they lay variations of brown eggs. The author believes that there might be a very distant relation to Aracaunas. Looks as though the numbers of Rumpies is very limited. SandHill may be the only show in town.

The manx rumpies do not have a lethal gene like the araucana, that is only in the tufted araucana. Manx rumpies also lay a white or pale tinted egg not blue. I think somewhere it said that 1 bird in 1000 laid a blue egg and there was belief that it had been mixed with araucana some where.

90% of the worlds araucana do not have a lethal gene. It is only the tufted araucana that are bred to tufted araucana, that can cause lethality, because it takes two copies of the gene to be lethal. The araucana are not a commercially viable bird to breed because of this and because of fertility issues due to lack of a tail. This is true for the manx rumpies also.

So anyone saying they don't want to give araucana a try because of the lethal gene need not worry. Just buy cleanfaced birds and only breed for the cleanface. They would not be up to standard, but the would lay a beautiful egg, be rumpless, sweet, good foragers, hardy, dual purpose as they have a nice breast when grown. They lay all year long.

I've seen that, I'd just like to see what is currently coming out of Sandhill. I suspect it's been numerous generations since they obtained stock, and they could very well look nothing like those originals anymore!

I am currently slightly obsessed with rumpless birds.

Just hatched my first rumpless Araucana x Rose Comb Brown Leghorn crosses!

I too like rumpless fowl having had a flock of rumpless non tufted Araucanas in the 70s. Missed the chickens on tv during desert storm , so what should they look like? Dr Mcgraw stated he got better fertility by using a number of males , makes sense-more competition. By doing so, the breeding was less selective , more like traditional rural farming of days gone by which resulted in the so called landrace livestock varieties. With no written standard for the breed I doubt if the birds look a like no matter who is breeding them now. I have too many projects at present to add another breed , but I am so tempted. That said I would love to see pics of some Rumpies no matter where they came from.
The Leghorn cross works great. , I crossed an Araucana cock - white leghorn (showtype) hen , got a nice little tailed splashed white hen who was a blue egg machine. The brown rosecomb is even better, should be pretty as well. Leghorns get a bad rap, but I love the beauty of the bird and they are real working birds.
Oh ! why Manx Rumpies.? why not the historic name of Persian Rumpless ?
