Congrats we have a RSL that gave us an egg at 12 weeks.
I too still get excited each day when I go get my eggs.

Our roo also crows with each egg. He is truely a great boy, he
will stand right there by the nesting boxes until they have laid their eggs.
He is so protective over his girls.

Congratulations Maple!! My round of babies are 6 months old this coming Wednesday. The only 2 babies laying are my Black Sex Links. I'm a little concerned that my RSL's are not laying eggs yet compared to everyone elses dates of laying. I did have a terrible round with coons that wiped out half of my babies a few weeks ago. Do you think that offset their cycles? The other breeds I have are RIR, Production Reds, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Ameraucana and Plymouth Rocks. Any clue as to when they might start laying?

Squats are a good indicator and color and size of their combs and wattles. Maple wattles and comb are twice as big as the other RSL I have that are the same age as her. Not all hens do squats from what I have read. If they are under stress from predators it may have something to do with it.

Congratulations. This is a red letter week for egg laying. My leghorn, Pinky, also just started laying. She has layed an egg a day for the last 6 days. She is the first of ten pullets and she makes sure everyone knows how special she is. The last two days she has climbed in her box several hours before the big event. Everyone (including 3 roos) tiptoes around waiting with anticipation. A few intrepid souls venture close enough to the coop to peek in. When she finally lays, she announces it loudly over and over for a couple minutes before cooly strutting down the ramp into the yard where her fans await her arrival in awe!

off my roost that is the cutest little story sounds like some of mine they are so fun to watch my little seramas have just started to lay and they are doing a great job I have 1.5 dozen from this wk.so proud of those girls although I have to look around out in the yards cuz they seem to always find some little spot that seems to apeal to them to lay

Well I think Pinky is making up for the fact that her first effort was less than stellar. She squacked for hours in the coop and made a little nest in the corner. Finally she came running out, hopped on a huge tree root we use as an outdoor roost, and let the first egg plop in the mud about three feet below. I was watching the big event in amazement so I dashed in and retrieved said egg. When I showed it to her and said" look what you did", she did a double take. It was hysterical. Now I guess she's overly cautious.
