I am looking forward to getting my first chicks this spring and want to include a breed for laying dark brown eggs. I also want rather docile friendly birds as this is my first experience with chickens. How do Maran and Welsummers compare tempermant wise?

I've had both. All were from breeders, not hatchery birds. With my birds, the Cuckoo Marans were/are calmer and easier to handle. My Wellie roo was really sweet, but his girls were kinda standoffish compared to the Marans. That may have just been the lines I had, though.

I have both and both are from hatchery as well as breeders. The Cuckoo Marans are nice girls. My Wellie girls are a lot friendlier since they started laying but have been standoffish and the Wellie roo has taken to striking the back of our legs so he may go in the stew pot.

I'm working on the Marans but my Welsummer, Irene is one of my three sweethearts. Always underfoot in the coop, while the rest of my flock is a bit more flightly.

both my Marans and Welsummer are very friendly I have two hatchery cuckoo Marans and they have ok temperments. The black and blue coppers run towards me when ever I go out. The welsummers were not raised from chicks by me so thats why they are a bit more reserved.

My Welsies are very sweet, always curious, aways coming to see me. Whenever I introduce new birds, my sweeties are the first to greet and accept the newbies. One time, when I had some just feathered-out pullets in their pen, my Welsie roo Phooey (short for Orpheus, my little joke. Phooey had a horrible time learning to crow) adopted them, showed them the best grass, etc.
