Ha, are you kidding me .... I have not even unplugged that Sportsman since I bought it. Fortunately, I have had a day or two in between, to clean and sanitize it every once in awhile. It's idiot proof. It's when they go into the hatcher (HovaBator) the worry begins!

Those pullet eggs I have been getting from my Blue Marans have been a nice dark color, but I am not quite ready to incubate any of them yet. Soon though .... soon!

Lisa~ I use that rubber type shelf liner, it has holes in it and as far as I can tell has not affected the humidity at all. It works great keeping their little toes out of the wire and they can get a good footing on it as it is not slippery, its also very easy to wash.
Fingers are crossed, good luck with the hatch!!!!!!!!!

I have 4 test Marans eggs that went into lockdown this morning too!

Eggs were temporarily set in the bator last night as I did not get the broody house done. It will be done today and when she has settled down and sat back on her toasty golf balls after the move I will transfer eggs to her. I was able to collect a few more eggs yesterday and total number of eggs set was 26.

I know I should know this but.......How many eggs should I give her?

Yes, it really seems like it, but it's actually some sort of film on the egg. In one spot that purple color came off (rubbed or wet spot) and its dark brown underneath. I was so excited when I unwrapped a purple egg! I don't care if it rubs off or not... it sure looks great! Hopefully it will hatch out a pullet that lays some exactly like that. The color looks more purple in person, but I can't get it to show exactly like that in the pics. It's faded a bit since I first unwrapped it, too.

gaeamama~

I have a Splash Marans gal that lays eggs just like that. Several are in the bator right now and I set more last night. I love that purplish look they have. People often do not believe me that they are Marans eggs until I wet one down for them to see the nice color under that coating only to dry quickly back to the purplish color. I believe it is a calcium deposit and harmless. If you go back to the first page of this thread and look at the very first post you will see one of these eggs that is actually white! The are the eggs on the left of the regular Marans eggs.

Just some info as many folks have been getting these eggs, it was discussed on MCC that it usually goes away and it's okay to breed these birds and incubate these eggs.

thanks pinkchick. I went back and looked at the first pic... WOW I didn't realize that was a Marans egg. I think it's pretty cool how that happens.
