Marans Madness March Hatch Along.....

The heat lamp is really as safe as you make it...it's all in the execution. Lots of reptile people have those same heat lamps on constantly, although not typically with a 250W bulb.

Can you get away with using a 100W or 150W bulb? For the number of peeps you're going to have, I'll bet you likely could.

You know, I think the main thing with the ones I have is there is no way to securely attach them to the side or top of the cage. But you are right, the 250 watt bulbs get so hot. I am thinking I need a different enclosure and a different bulb. I put the chicks in a cage because I figured they needed good ventilation, but I see pictures all the time of chicks in boxes and plastic tubs

They probably hold the heat a little better.

Congratulations on the babies.....so cute!

#1 Blue
#2 Black is my guess
#3's the one on the left is blue, the other may be blue but a darker blue
What are the parent stock....did you say and I missed it?

Last year when I used to manually incubate instead of relying on broodies, I used a plastic bin the 6-8 inch deep for newbies then graduated to a deeper one when they got older. I used the heat lamp assembly but put a 90W bulb in it and laid it on its side at an angle then I had the top of an old bator that I used as a partial lid to hold the heat in... They did great... Let me go find a pic on my photobucket.
Oh yeah I forgot, right before I sold all of my flock and accessories last year(for personal reasons) I had a commercial brooder I moved them to.
But anyway... another idea for heat retention could be, since they don't cost much anyway, would be to buy two of these short bins and cut a rectangle out of the center of the bottom of one, duct tape a screen across the hole and set it on top bottom up. I would have done that had I not found that old lid. Then you could control heat retention but laying a rag over the screen or part of it depending on what temp you want... Then put a lower watt bulb in later so not as warm. For lots of chicks you can get these bins in the long style too.

I got the eggs from an auction by a BYC member. I have to find out what type of breeding the parent stock they came from. The eggs were mixed speckled and very dark chocolate eggs.I believe were
bred from blue and black CM's. Anyway, I'll be more than happy to collect this type of eggs from their nesting box in 5-6 months
Here are some photos:

Hi cthrash1,

How did the hatching go? I got the same eggs from the same source. I was able to hatch all but one Blue and Black Copper Marans (10). It could have been 10 if I didn't drop one on day 2 when I was turning them in my still-air Hova bator.
