We picked this rooster up a few months ago, mid molt, along with a few hens. He didn't come with any pedigree, but we didn't ask either. The lady was moving and had to get rid of all of them. He molted out and now he is beautiful. Today on Craigslist a saw a rooster very similar to him being advertised as a Marans. What do the BYCers think? Do I have a diamond in the rough or just a backyard special? He gets to stay regardless as he has a lovely temperament.

He looks as if he may have white/pink skin? If so, he could be a blue copper Marans, but I'm not sure I'd call him a diamond in the rough. He may carry a darker brown egg gene, but his color is very messy. You wouldn't want to use him for breeding quality Marans, no matter how dark his egg genes. But, he's very pretty and would make nice backyard mixed breed birds, with that blue and all the extra copper leakage.

Good info, thanks. So white/pink skin is a tell? Either way, a rooster who is good looking, good natured and good to his girls is of value to me. I'm no more than a backyard breeder of replacement hens. My friends have a well bred, good looking Barred Rock and I had to smack him along the side of his head with a rolled up newspaper just to get in far enough to check the food and water. To me, a rooster like that is of no value.

Yep, Marans are a white skinned breed. So are Orpingtons, Sussex and Faverolles, but he doesn't look like any of them.

I wouldn't kick him out of my flock, that's for sure. I recently purchased a blue Marans rooster and was actually hoping for some copper, but none were available locally. I love the bright colors of the blue and the copper together [IMG].

And cause I can, here'a a pic of my new guy Mel....
