The halo effect he shows in his hackles is discouraged in a Black Copper, but I'm unsure whether it's acceptable in a Wheaten.

Halo effect...interesting term. On the French Marans site, it appears most of the featured Wheatens have similar hackles: http://marans.eu/fro.htm#fro
The standard description for the Wheaten cock in French indicates that the saddle and hackle feathers be uniformly red or reddish-brown without too much "flamme," which literally means flame but I am not sure if that is referring in plumage terms to shafting or to variation in tone along the feather. Alas my college French education was literature-based rather than agriculturally inclined, so not a single one of my classes was on poultry fancy terminology! This is a helpful image from the French Bantam Club's website and I hope it's okay to share it here (the image didn't have a copyright on it) since it labels all the parts in French making it easy to draw the parallels between the French terms and those in an English SOP:

From what I've seen. Wheaten Roos do have a halo. When i see a black copper with a halo I think it has wheaten in it. Flame n halo are the same thing

I found the SOP for the Wheaten Marans and this is the quote for the hackles: Neck—Hackle:Orange red at head, gradually shading to golden orange towards shoulders;
free from dark feathers. Some faint striping allowed in the lower hackle.

So the Wheaten Roosters hackles do have a "halo or flame" whichever way you want to say it.

Sue, you are right the Wheaten Marans male does have a hackle that is in the form of a Halo. When the French refer to a FLAME it is the black line in the lower Hackle. The larger the Black stripe the larger the flame. Don

I thought flame meant it looks like a flame, darker & lighter colors...I can't picture the black stripe as a flame, but thanks for the clarification.

Sue, I read this on the French site a few year ago. The Gold around the black stripe will resemble a flame. Don

I thought I'd throw this out here first if anyone is interested.

I have a pristine copy of "La Genetique Des Couliurs", which is put out by the Marans Club De France. A couple of years ago, one of our club members ordered some of these books and sold them to us. She said she was going to do a translation of it, but never did as far as I know.

I bought it, and I think it was around $75. If anyone is interested, I guess the symbols are the same as in english, but I don't read French even after 3 years of it in high school...poor retention I guess!

So, I'd like $45. I don't think shipping would be more than $5. So give me a hollar if you are interested.

It gives all the genetic formulas for the different varities. Has a nice clear plastic cover and the paper is nice thick stock. 112 pages long. Lots of beautiful color pictures.

This is a nice book. I used to own a copy when I had Marans. Since sold. Price is right.
The book can be translated very well with Google Translate. There is not too much text
on each page to prohibit retyping it in Google translate . Hard to find.
