Marans - SOP discussion thread

There will be a qualifying meet, wherein the APA judges looking at them will determine if they are consistent enough to be included in the SOP. The SOP will remain "proposed" until the Cuckoo is accepted.

As far as the description of the cuckoo pattern, I'm honestly not exactly sure how one would go about requesting a change; I would think that, since the Marans Chicken Club USA (MCCUSA) is the organization that's handling the acceptance and has written the proposed standard, you'd talk with a director or committee member. If you are a member of MCCUSA, there is a forum where the proposed standard(s) are discussed, here: http://maranschickenclubusa.com/SMF/index.php

I believe the show where all the Cuckoo Marans were gathered was only to see if there were enough Cuckoo out there to have an acceptance show with the APA. Nicol "ohmomma" was on the Cuckoo committee writing the proposed SOP. Nicol might be a better person to contact about the proposed SOP.

You know what I want more than anything? Is some decent enough quality Silver Penciled Wyandottes to get started working on. That's my other favorite pattern beside birchen and I adore the wyandottes. Down this way, there is absolutely nothing in the way of Large Fowl Ones.

]Weren't you working on Silver Marans not long ago ? What happened with that project ?

They are CUCKOO NOT BARRED that is what that is conveying. Barring should be STRAIGHT from one side of the feather to the other. Cuckoo is more V shaped and irregular. Barring STOPS and STARTS Color. Cuckoo does not work that way.
your explanation conveys a better pic than the standard; I am a MCCUSA member so will message Nicol or April and just bring it to their attention that the average person reading that will not understand what is wanted.

So, if there is only a proposed SOP, who has proposed it, and when will it be accepted? The way I understand it if a proposed SOP has not been accepted, there is no SOP. Right?
no. The proposed standard is what will probably be accepted when the variety is accepted into the APA standard at their qualifying meet. If you say enter a cuckoo marans in a show, (and you can even tho they are not an accepted variety yet) they will be judged according to the proposed standard.

Quote: Silver Marans and Silver Penciled Wyandottes are nothing alike in pattern. I sold the Silver Marans to a friend that was just in love with them. I decided after trying to work with them for over a year that I just didn't have the time to focus on them or the space really. They needed so much work its not even funny. The birchens are my first love, so when having to decide what stayed, it was not a hard choice for me.

Fully understand,,, just thought I recalled some photos of the silver marans some time ago and wondered what ever became of them, thought they were quite attractive myself.
Birchens are also a favorite of mine,,,, but, space always plays a big part in what we can keep.

Does anyone have a photo of a cuckoo maran rooster that meets the proposed SOP standards?
Have you taken a look at the conformation drawings? First and foremost, type is the #1 concern when we talk about meeting the SOP for Marans. The type is the same for all LF Marans - that has to be set before color is taken into consideration. Sidebar: at a recent show, a wheaten pullet was named BB out of probably 17 birds shown. That Wheaten had much too much black on her; however, her type was fantastic! That's why she was placed the highest of them all.
