Marans - SOP discussion thread

Does this help, to show comb points?

I count 6 points as well.

Keep in mind that the 6th point is only a half a point cut out of 100 total for the entire bird so it is minor.

What a great diagram; thank you!
Basically, I've seen some combs that had several little bumps before actual points started and I wanted to make sure that a little serration was not counted as "points". I've read the older Marans threads and didn't see that exact topic discussed so I thought I'd ask.
Thanks all!

Great question - I could 6 points as well. so if your boy was perfect (shouldn't we all wish!) in every other way, his ending score would be 99.5, yes?

I like the aesthetic value of his comb (I tend to be a bit of a comb snob, even though they don't count much off for extra points). Although he has one extra point, they are all uniform, and the overall head shot is a handsome one, for what that matters.

I posted this pic in the Black Copper thread to get an idea on the shank feathering we are looking for - thought maybe I could get more opinions?

This is a Black Copper Marans, I no longer have him, but it was the best picture I had to show shank feathering. I actually prefer the looks of heavier feathering, but I know we are not wanting heavy - but, is this feathering still too heavy?

Well, just wait till I get you a chest shot. LOL He started out with a smattering that I hoped would stay within the "10% flaming acceptable" range, but now it's a good halfway down his chest and that part essentially looks gold-laced. On the plus side, it seems to be the perfect copper color, not too red/dark and not at all brassy, either. He's definitely going to be a very handsome fella; now if only he can make some darker sons just like him!

I'm a tail and comb snob, I will admit.

Here's a few more pics I just took.. "Whatchoo lookin' at, lady?"

From above..I think he has a great shape and good color balance so far..

And here he is with his ladies and the Jeane C1 cockerel with better color (but he's skinny compared to my Davis guy, his eyes are brown, and his comb is rather dome-shaped)..

One of the ladies is straw hackled, but she's got great type so I'm going to see what she produces.

This is a good example of too much copper in the breast and goes down into the thighs it looks like.

The standard calls for black breast or with a few copper spots, or something like that. So, Ed, would you dq this bird or just mark down for the breast color and if so how much?

I thought more than 10% was a DQ.
Yeah, the standard specifically says "Not laced". His two male hatchmates both had black breasts, but he had the best size and type by far so I'm going to line breed back to the dark female to correct for his excess color.

Can anyone who's bred a few successive generations give his/her experience on breeding towards the standard to overcome a particular fault? For instance, how did you go about breeding for less/more color, heavier/lighter shank feathering, more/fewer comb points, etc.? What worked, didn't work, and how many generations did it take?

I'd like to allow this line of discussion, as I believe it DOES pertain to the SOP.

So - those of you who have bred for a specific thing - please give your experiences on this.

ETA: I have gotten better combs from breeding a cock bird with 7 points to a hen with 5. I did two hatches, and both had offspring with 5-7 points.

I currently have a male that has a bit of color in his chest, but extremely good color balance overall; I'll be using him on my black females to see if he brings color back to their hackles. I think others have done this...
