His eye color is beautiful!

x2, more roo! I like your olive egger girl. I have been chasing my first pea combed olive egger (bcm roo x bl ameraucana) around (she freeranges) waiting to see if she will lay her first olive egg. Her half sister of the same age that she runs around with, (a bcm roo x a split blk/lav orp) just laid her first egg and it was at least a good speckled #4 on the marans egg chart lol.

Finally getting brave enough. I have posted some of my roosters before, but only one of my BCM eggs. This was mainly because they keep getting darker as they go. My birds seem to start out lighter then get darker. Also I have not gotten the hang of getting a picture to properly reflect the color. This one is close. The egg is really just a bit darker than the picture. Let me know what you think.

Debbi: you asked where I have been, I get on here at least 4-5 days a week. But usually do not speak, up, just read and learn.

All you Marans breeders : This thread is so helpful! I am learning lots. Plus most of you are so helpful and friendly. BYC in general ROCKS!

Keep smiling!

Fantastic egg. So is the hen who laid it a mossy colored or normal colored BCM? Just curious....
It is cold and rainy here today that's why I've been on byc off and on all day LOL! I should go out and scoop up that mean ol blue little roo and paint his toenails or something.

Depends on what you are working toward. Do you want pure black? Your black pullets from the Birchen Cuckoo cross will still be half birchen, because the black from the cuckoo is dominant it won't show. Breed them back to the birchen, and you will get pure birchens and split birchen/blacks again. But, your barred roos from the sex link cross will only carry a single factor of barring. Cross them back to your cuckoos, and you should get some black hens, some of them should be pure black, some will still carry birchen. One in four will be black, one in 8 pure black with no birchen.

Cross these hens back to their father and you get a pure black rooster, also one in 8.

Yes, awesome looking egg, and nice OE with the peacomb. After frostbitten combs this winter, peacombed birds are looking very attractive. I like peacombed hens more than peacombed roos though, am I the only one who thinks they kind of look feminine on a roo?

I'm glad this thread wasn't at 1000 pages when I first started lurking. I don't think I'd have had the strength to read it all. As it was, it took me weeks to read the 400+ pages a few months ago!

Okay, I think I've spent a good weeks quota of time on this thread today. Goodnight all, it's late at night here.
