I have a question -

I'm getting some Marans chicken eggs and was wanting to now what would the outcome of a Blue Birchen roo over splash/black/blue hens be?

Thanks!

X2?

Also, if you breed a Blue Copper Roo to a Black Copper Hen (or visa versa?) is the blue offspring considered purebred and the black copper offspring considered purebred as well?

Yes they are still purebred birds when produced from a black cpr x blue cpr mating. w If it will help when I get home I will log back on and go into a little better explanation about blue to blue or blue to splash or splash to black or splash to splash breedings.

YES, EACH are PURE. Blue is just a weaker BLACK . . . so they are very closely related. The standard for Blue Copper should be very, very, very, very, close to the standard of the black copper marans.

Yes, I am saying a blue x black will help maintain / darken the blue coloring.

I don't think there is anything such as a "too BLACK" black copper marans. Generally, when I hear "TOO DARK" it is referring to the coppering being too dark.

I don't think there would be a benefit to the BLACK in breeding blue x black. HOWEVER, I am too new at this to know for sure. I don't do SPLASH. I am all about the BLACK Copper Marans.

PINK does a lot with Blues, splashes AND blacks. . . . so hearing from her would be good.

Anyone else do work with the Splash OR cross the blue x black to benefit the BLACK ? ?

I find that breeding the Black Copper to the Blue Copper helps keep the lacing very crisp on the Blue Coppers produced from that specific crossing. I find that the Blue Coppers made from Splash Copper x Blue Copper or Blue Copper x Blue Copper tend to loose the crisp and defined lacing effects on the blue feathering, it doesn't go completely away just like it is more muted and not as defined. I also find that egg color from the Blue Coppers created from Black Copper to Blue Copper mating have better egg color.

Black Copper and Blue Copper and Splash Copper birds can be ran together in one pen and all the offspring produced from them will be pure Blue Coppers, Black Coppers and Splash Copper birds. Hope this helps!

I should say that the blue gene acts like a diluter gene so to speak.....one copy of the blue gene will turn everything that is normally black on a bird to blue......2 copies of the blue gene (a splash bird has 2 copies) will dilute blue even further to Splash. Also Blue is a leaking gene some some random darker blue feathers (some of these darker blue feathers can actually appear to look like they are black, but they are not they are blue just very dark blue) can and will pop up on the bodies of blue birds from time to time. This leakiness is also what lets the random flecking of dark blue or lighter blue feathers show through on a Splash birds.
