Now I just need to find me some blues....

Well I just candled my eggs and turned them for the last time tonight. I ended up tossing 14 and left 6 questionables and 52 others that looked good to go to me. This was out of 72 eggs not the best ratio but not horrible either. So Im know on day 17 going on 18. I getting even more excited. I also found out my too swappers for april.

I am going to give you a REAL SIMPLE explanation and may not be TECHNICALLY correct, but you will get the idea.

BLUES come from a diluted black gene. Blue Copper and Black Copper marans can be raised together in the same pen

Blacks mated to Blacks = 100% blacks
Blacks mated to blues = 50% blacks and 50% blues
Blues mated to blues = 25% splash, 25% blacks, 50% blues.

I know NOTHING about wheaten, BUT would assume the theory would be similliar.

Lisa, a little correction, Black Copper and Blue Copper can be bred in the same pen but you sure do not want to put the BLack copper colored chicks back with the pure Black Copper flock. Any Black copper from this type mating that I didn't want to use in the Blue copper matings would be culled as they would not be in the same body type or produce good type Black Copper. The same goes for the wheaten. Using these back in the original Black Copper or wheaten is where a lot of the odd colors are coming from.

it is fine to use the Black Copper and wheaten to make these other colors but do not recommend putting the mixed colors back with the originals. Don

Don,

I am not sure if I understand.

I have ONE black copper hen, BUT she is totally USELESS to me since she only produces male chicks

I REALLY REALLY REALLY like a plain ole Black copper marans hens.

I have Three Blue copper hens and a Black copper roo. I was hoping to use these to produce some BLACK COPPER hens for a future flock of black copper hens. Are you saying that the BLACK COPPER PULLETS produced from the blue copper hen x black copper roo would be useless for this because they are going to lack good body type? Why would or How would the body type change?

Please, explain to me again - - - I didn't get it the first time

AND

I went into lock down this morning . . . TODAY is day 19 for the shipped eggs.

I set my JUMBO eggs a day early because they were taking a day extra to hatch.
So, they are technically on Day 20 AND I have a CHICK ALREADY. I have 2 more pipping.
MAN, I have never had them come in early like this. . . I heard them peeping when I locked them down this morning.

I think I am gonna have an AWESOME HATCH! I am SOooooo Excited after messing it up so bad last time!
I am running the humidity back HIGH like I did in the beginning, vents are open, and lockdown was on the right day!
I tried to lower the humidity to what some of you guys hatch at, but it was not good last time. I am running 65 - 70% now. However, the chick hatching just boosted it to 75% humidity. This works for me, I won't run it lower than 65% at lockdown again.

Day 19 and a chick already (day 20 for this particular chick, but still exciting)

Okay, question here-watching our chicks pip and work on getting out, we are noticing what appears to be 2 inside membranes. 1 is white in color and close to the shell and the other is more clear and around the chick-does this make it harder for the chick to get out? Never noticed it with our other breed hatches. Temp around 100.4 and humidity about 57%. 2 almost out, 3 pips and 4 ??? at this time. We are at day 21!

CONGRATS! CONGRATS! CONGRATS! C'Mon Chickies!

Those 2 membranes are normal for my eggs....don't know about everyone else's.

That second membrane is the one that I have problems with if they are going to shrink wrap. Raise the humidity a little if you can like to 60 or 65 maybe. I have not had any issues with the first white membrane and they seem to break through that one just fine. I will be home all day today Cheryl if you need to PM or email me. I will try and stay logged in to BYC.

I had one chick like that in my last hatch. Yes, watch them, as that inner membrane shrink wraps really fast after they start to zip! In all of my other eggs, it seems like the two membranes were together, but this one seemed to be, as you said, wrapped onto the chick. I'd never seen it before.
