Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have a new possibility on the reddish brown birchen you hatched.
I was doing some reading and found this:
"The Db gene (when homozygous) significantly changes chick down pattern/colour, in all E locus alleles, except for eWh. This gene was named after its trait of modifying ER - black down to brown shades (in some genotypes, the brown may be restricted to the head region- i.e. black body unchanged). " The same source stated Mahogany is NOT visible in chickdown.

The Db is a eumelanin restrictor, meaning it restricts black, like the Co gene. I believe that the brown headed Wade Jean specials that Don gets from time to time also carry Db, and will probably feather out mossy.

But this gene also expresses in chickdown as described above, making our normal BC chickdown shades of brown. Maybe the dilution of black from the andalusian blue gene is making that chickdown look sort of reddish brown. Maybe it's the blue birchen version of Don's Wade Jean specials. We know some Marans carry Db because it is what makes Blacktailed Buffs out of Wheatens.

Got my Marans chickens eggs from (Aceschix) today!

The eggs are a lot darker than they appear

Ok....I'm either very slow today...or perhaps just very dense...but I can't wrap my head around this........

Why not breed a Black Copper (produced from a Blue Copper) back into a pure Black Copper if the Black Copper produced is of nice type and meets the requirements of being a Black Copper?
In my mind...I cannot see why that BCM produced from a Blue Copper or Splash Copper would be a problem...it is still a Black Copper...it is not a Blue Copper....it is not a Black Copper that carries the Blue gene (if it carried the blue gene it would be blue) so how would using that Black Copper be a problem? I could see it being a problem if it had Wry tail, Squirrel tail, crooked toes, excessive white in the plumage upon maturity, yellow legs, roach back, pinched tail....etc..etc...etc.
Is the point that some Blues can be so dark that they can appear Black instead of Blue and be mistaken for a Black Copper instead of a Blue Copper?

Kim, Look at all the show results from around the USA and see what has won Best of Breed and reserve. I have never heard of anything but a BC winning ever. The BC type and over all Marans type is by far better than any other color. That is the reason you should not breed an inferior Marans from the Blue variety back into the BC. I believe you are concentrating mostly on color in the above post.

Lets put it this way if breeding the BC there is no benefit to adding any Marans from crosses into the pure BC. Don

I really like my Genesis 1588, with egg turner. I've hatched in March in Vermont with the wood stove in the next room and the incubator temp and humiditiy were rock steady; room temps from 55 - 78 in one day. I did add a wet sponge at lockdown and was able to get 70% humidity; the house was at 17% humidity! Not super fancy but pretty fool proof, and a great window for viewing.

x2 And I love that it takes the guess work out of it. To me, there is something so valuable about not having to hover over the incubator to make sure I've twisted the little crank to the exact 1/24" of a millimeter to get the perfect temperature. I swear I was getting gray hair with my old incubator and temps.

My only complaint is it doesn't hold enough eggs

X3 I always add six or seven more eggs on the top edge above the turner, hand turn for the first 7 days, toss quitters and fill in the empty spots in the turner

Me too!

I saw a photo somewhere on here where someone had actually double stacked eggs on the turner--it's probably a good thing I cant find that photo again to reference exactly how they did it or I'd be DANGEROUS
