Hi

It's good to get little ones interested in chickens. It's where my interest started with Hickity Pickity and Henny Penny. Gosh! Thats a good few years ago.

HOWEVER, you do have to make sure the little chickies have their space FIRST

I'll RACE you to getting the chicken barn done! Dh and I went to home depot today to get the material to start our new chicken coops.

If you got your material, you are already ahead of me. I'm still cleaning up from the old barn. We were going to go get cement for the foundation yesterday, but couldn't because of rain. We would have had to have hauled it in the back of a pickup, and we didn't want to take a chance on it getting wet, even if we covered it.

Villae Chicken,

Thanks for your explaination on the black x blue subject, I do understand what you are saying. I'm still in the process of building my flock, with my first clutch of my own breeding in the bator now, due next Saturday! It also depends on my limited space right now, so the blues and blacks will have to be combined for awhile. Even with the BCM flock, although they all come from similar lines, who knows for sure? I guess I'll just have to see what comes about with this hatch, then start my culling program from there. My two blue copper boys, the older ones, (NOT PINK'S!!!), are already destined to be culled out. Pip is out too, even if he was the best Marans to ever hit the planet, I WON'T be breeding on his pee poor attitude!!

If I had had a gun in my hand the other morning, he would've met his maker right then! Pink's babies are turning out very nice, so far, at 5 weeks today. Two of the BCM pullets have the blackest feathering of any BCM I have hatched thus far. They were from a Blue Copper x BCM, and a Blue Copper x Blue. Since you mentioned leg color, I had to go check again.

The two blue coppers have slate legs, and the three BCMs (pullets) have dark slate legs, so leg coloring looks good. So, it will be a slow process for me to grow the flock, breed selectively with single matings when I can, and cull from there. I would like to show a few birds some day, if I can find a show anywhere near me worth entering, and if I finally come up with something worth showing! I was hoping to get some Wheatens too this year, but unless I can get some help with making the other coop/run, that will have to wait. In the mean time, I am enjoying their antics...and eggs!!

Ha Ha!! Here I agree with you Don! I've seen the Iowa Blue thread before too, and wondered how long it would be till someone started using them to make Birchen Marans. Seems they have yellow leg problems in the gene pool, and also the cross would lessen the size of the birds, and you would lose egg color. Just my opinion, but if you can't get the color you want and stay within the breed (no outcrosses), then you don't need the color! That's just me..

The APA officials are at the show this weekend where they voted to approve the BC.

Can not be much more official than Bev Davis telling everyone they passed. Don

I guess by Monday a press release should be out with the official standards, it seems to me if it was approved a simple news release on the APA sight would be worth the time to post.
