Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

DEBBI!!!!!!!!! I was just getting on here specifically to see if you had posted and that you were okay! I am just heartbroken about Joplin. I have been there a number of times when I visit my sister. I had acually thought about moving there. Such a terrible loss of life.

About the storm cellar.... DO IT! My sister lives just west of Joplin. They heard the warning and went to their storm cellar that they just built a couple years ago. They were all down there, but leave it to Sis, she could'nt stay down there. She went out to look, and she saw the tornado forming just about 1/2 mile south of their place, so they all came up to watch.

The day before my husband stood in the driveway and watched one that went over toward Highland. I haven't heard of any damage from that one, though.

We have a little place in our basement that is solid concrete on 3 sides and has a reinforced concrete top on it. That is where we will go if I ever feel threatened enough to quit watching the storm. I'm not a storm chaser, but I have always felt a sense of "awe" watching them. You are right, though. The ones at night are the worst. Also, I never liked it when I lived in town and I couldn't see for miles like I can here. We always went to the basement if there was a threat then.

Glad to hear that the bad weather missed everyone. I remember having those cellars and basements in the midwest. They are great to have. I would love to at least have a root cellar here. The houses here don't usually have either and the soil is so sandy and makes sinkholes so kinda impossible. We get winter tornados here that just drop out of the sky and hit here and there without much warning at all. We also can get hurricanes and flooding. I don't know what people here are supposed to do for shelter lol if a tornado did come lol.
I've been through a few bad hurricanes and been flooded out in S. Louisiana 2005 and that is was no fun either. Stay safe everyone.

Just wanted to introduce myself and let everyone know that I'm following this thread! Marans are on my list of potential breeds that might be right for my family. Hope to learn more about them from you guys!

I'm not the most educated person on this thread (far from it!

and that I have a sense of humor, just that not everyone appreciates it all the time!

Anywhoo...welcome to the MARANS thread of BYC and DO "chime in" with questions. I have found that there are no stupid questions on here, but there are some stupid answers. I think I might be known for giving a few!

Ok guys I have a question for ya when you all come back on.
I have a Splash Roo that I hatched last year in the same batch I hatched 3 black hens they had the slightest lacing of white on a few feathers when they went thru the juvie molt that stayed I ask the breeder about them because this was suppost to be a splash X splash breeding he tells me I must have mixed the eggs with mine (I know I did not) I am hatching now and expected to get solid blue only but as the babies feather out all are feathering in blue splash very beautiful I might add. Now my question is can the hens be black looking and still be splash as it apears by the offspring that they are?
