Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hello Marans aficionados,

I am looking for some Wheaten Marans eggs. If you or someone you know has some available kindly send me a PM or email. Pullets or hens would also be of interest, but I'm guessing the likelihood of anyone have extras is pretty much nil....

Thanks!
Bailey

I would like some Bev Davis lines FBCMs that lay DARK eggs (at least 7) and located in the SOUTH EAST of US.
Would anybody like to step up and become my Santa Claus this year ? ? ?

One the Marans forums that I was involved with before getting kicked off had some people that said they had Marans that layed Spherical shape eggs. I get a few but am interested in some that lay the majority that are spherical. The favorite book, Poultry Breeding by Morley Jull says the Spherical eggs will be darker because it takes longer for the spherical to travel down the canal.

Oh, I would also like Black Coppers that do not have the carnation Comb and White ear lobes if at all possible.

Don if I was going to try and hatch some chicks for showing when would be best time? Do you hatch for the show or is it like other animals Jan 1 and after.....just wondering or just pray that you get a good one

I don't know what shape mine are - - - I just know they aren't dark enough for me ! !

I've decide to keep my mossy hens and just not breed them. I was going to cull them, but I really lover their personality. I've got some partridge rocks and welsummer pullets that aren't great on personality. I am waiting for them to grow up and then I'll decide if I am going to keep them.

I know I can not keep everyone, but I really want to keep the friendliest. In my flock - - that is the marans.

{Anyone on the forum have Black Copper Marans that lay the Spherical shape eggs ?

Don,

Don't know how true that therory is. In the last two clutches I've hatched, there were at least 3 of the sphereical eggs in each clucth. The first clutch laid in April, the second in June. One of the round eggs in the first bunch was huge, but probably only a 5 in color with speckles. The others may have been a 7. The second clutch's were 7s too. I would've thought if that therory was correct, that the huge round egg should've been really dark, but it sure wasn't. Just my casual observation.

If the run is covered I would cut canals to keep it out and use pelleted bedding to soak up the moisture but that is a temporary measure. I live in adobe dirt so I have rubber mats then clean those no mud in the pens or holes that they would like to dig. I rotate outside pens to keep it from getting yucky there they can dig and have fun.

I live in the microclimate section of Fort Myers, FL...Some years are wetter than others and my 6 acres turn into a pond...my chickens are free range during the day and then they go to their coops at night. I have to apply pine bedding to the ground, and I build my coops (which are separated by each breed and variety of chicken I own), on higher land of my 6 acres. I am surrounded by predators at night so the birds have to be locked up. My Marans, silkies, and cochin bantams are too valuable to be fed to the wild. I even spotted a blank Florida panther the other night...because of the water...guess what I get in my backyard at times????? Alligators!!!! So...I am a bit more overprotective with my flock one would say

I try and hatch most of my large fowl in December as this way I can show all the fall shows with adult fowl. The large fowl need to be older to have good growth for the shows, I have some bantam breeds that do ok at 5-6 months old. I like most of my young fowl to be at least 9-10 months.

Bears, cougars, coyotes, coons, possums, skunks, bobcats, snakes, hawks, and eagles, feral hogs, and owls are PLENTY for me to worry about!!
