Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Everytime I catch my fowl up to worm or vaccinate i use a mixture of Sevin XLR Plus and water to keep the lice and regular mites. I mix at 6 parts water and 1 part XLR. You can spray or use a small brush. I put at base neck under the hackle and about one inch below the vent. This will be good for at least four months unless they molt.

Something that is really weird is that wheat straw does not have the mite like Oat straw.

I love wheat hay but hard to get same with barley hay (smooth beard) I'm getting oat again but this shouldn't have any mites at least the hay last year didn't

Maybe that's why my one BCM rooster keeps chasing his leg feathers.

He spins in circles until he gets dizzy and then he quits for a while. He doesn't have any parasites at all. Must be those itchy molted leg feathers growing back in.

I had never noticed they molted the leg feathers , but stands to reason they do. I have Bramas and they don't entirely shed all the leg feathering at once, but they have more to shed.

Here are some updated pics of the babies I hatched from Wynette's eggs!

This little one is from my own flock. I have never hatched one with this much white before. I'm curious to see how it feathers out. I named it Ghost!

darn, I just backed out of getting Wynetts eggs for Sept., really too late for me to be hatching here in vermont. But I will sure be buying from her in the spring! Those eggs and chicks look great.

Awwww!! What pretty babies! Hope they got to watch something good on TV while having their photo shoot!

The last chick you showed, looks a lot like my "Precious" chick. Lots of white and yellow fluff! Then she started getting spots on her breast area??? She has since lost them and is getting blacker by the day. Very faint tinge of copper showing through on the nape. Still don't know what they are, someone had suggested crossed with a Pene or some Pene genes were coming out? We'll see after they all feather out. Hope I get as lucky as you did with my hatch, this last one STUNK!! Congrats to you gvntofly05 , and Grandma Wynette!

Wynette, I don't see that anyone has commented on your roo....things have been clipping along so quickly on this thread

...

I REALLY like him...there is nothing I don't like about him, and it's amazing he looks so complete at such a young age.
He'll only get better with age, and I hope you'll show him to us in another few months

Don~ My copper splash roo is molting right now, he will be 1 yr old on Aug. 19th, he has lost his lovely shank feathers. I can see that they are starting to come back in, he is my 3rd roo to lose the shank feathering during a molt. Seems like they take forever to grow back in.
