Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Cool on the Silkie hatch, sorry for the Marans. My Marans hatches have stunk from day one! I'd be thrilled with 80%, 100% I'd be over the moon! The thought of trying my hand at another breed will make me see if it's me or what. The last hatch should've been 90% according to the eggs I lost. As I candled them, the air cell looked to be 1/4 the size of the egg, the rest was black with chick.

All were rocking by the end of day 20.

I'm becoming a big fan of the hatching hens....another one today and I gave it to the mama hen all is well. If only I could control it

then I could plan...oh well I know I have a couple of good sitting hens and 1 that will set and take chicks when ever you want and 1 that does the whole thing...who knows if they will do it again sure saves electricity and is very fun to watch.

I bet it's fun to watch! Been years since I've had a broody hen & momma. Hope being the control freak that I am, I can let them do the job in PEACE!

Your best chance of getting more BTB's is by crossing him to a Wheaten. The Db gene that gives the BTB only works on the Wheaten base. Even Wheaten based birds need the ID gene to clear up the shanks - but they clear up much more easily on wheaten based birds than ER birchen based birds (BCM).

Ahhh- ok! I have 2 wheaten hens that lay awesome dark eggs, but no wheaten roo. I have been getting chicks that show a ton of red like he did as a youngster, but they have dark legs. I will give it a shot after I put some blue wheaten olive egger eggs in. I've been putting it off because I have been hatching wheaten ameraucanas and don't want to mix up the chicks if they look too similar.

Thanks!

Then you should take some of mine... of the 12 or so laying hens I have right now 6 have been (or are currently) broody this year. I think it might be contagious....

It IS contagious!
I have my marans eggs from marquisella and raven1 under 3 different broodies and a few in the incubator. I just gave them to the broodies like 2 days before lockdown, seen as how I have had such an awful number of quitters and drowned chicks this year. I sure hope the broodies do better than I've been!
