I am TOTALLY delighted to have my black copper hatch and raise the chicks... She refused to accept the white chicks. She accepted the day old black chicks from the incubator but attacked the white chicks... So, she has three chicks and I have 5 chicks to raise.

I have a blue copper broody right now too. Hope she hatches out the batch under her. It is her first time being broody.
She just started laying less than two months ago and is broody already.

Sorry, I can't get better pictures. Everytime I pull out the camera, she runs and hides under the brooder / coop.

Her backside looks good too....

Another way to get some really funky combs with Marans looking birds can be due to crossing the Marans to the Ameraucanas (Olive Eggers) then crossing back to a Marans. I found this out on accident because I was experimenting with egg color. I ended up with some of the funkiest combs on some roosters who look exactly like a Marans except the comb. One looks like it was rolled up in the back and has all these wierd points sticking out. It looks like a weapon lol !! Best to make sure to keep them far far away from the breeding pens...like in the freezer.

Have a couple of comments to make on the Carnation Comb. The side Sprig and Carnation Comb are two different things entirely. The Sprig is found in most all lines of chickens if not kept in check. The Carnation Comb will only show up if there is Penne influence. The Penne influence shows mostly on the male , but will show occassionally on the female. I had the carnation comb show in some bought eggs two year ago and as usual cull all in the hatch.

Good morning all

Lisa ~ That Cracker turned out real pretty, so did her sister!

No luck yesterday getting any pics on my girl Precious' comb. She was out in the yard, and I could get up next to her, but as soon as she saw the camera >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>gone!

Will try again today if I'm up to it in this heat. Next week is supposed to be hotter!

Glad I sat out on the porch a little longer than I usually do last night. All the chooks were in the run, and as it was cooling off, all the hormonal teenage roos came to life.

Everyone was flying and squawking and running around, usual stuff here. After one big flurry, I heard a distressed chick call. ??? I looked out and could only see a black lump that was not moving in the chick pen. Ran down there (well, walked real fast), and sure enough, here is Solo hanging upside down from a cage I left in their run so they can perch on it. The little dummy had gotten her toe caught in the wire, and was hanging perfectly still, upside down!

Now most chickens would've been flapping and twisting, probably breaking a leg. Solo just stayed still, and I lifted her up and unhooked her toe. Held her and checked her out, and she is fine. She is so calm and sweet, and gave me a look like, "I knew you'd come Mom, thanks!". I carried her around for a bit calming her, then put her down, and she ran off to bed. Funny thing, even though she has her "big girl" voice, she used a baby chick type call to get my attention. Had she been screaming and flapping, I'm sure the bigger bully girls in the pen would've started a bullying frenzy on her in her vunerable position, but that was not the case. Pretty smart, I thought, for a chicken!

Needless to say, the cage will be gone today so we won't have that problem again!
