Oh, and since all my Marans right now look terrible (feather quality is down the drain. . . possibly because of their summer diet vs winter diet) I'll show off something half Marans.
It's interesting, really.
Mommy was this beaut, a prized Black Copper from Wynette.
Daddy was a Tolbunt Polish. It was an accident, I swear!!
Aaaand - Baby is now a grown keeper. He's kept the lacing from the Polish, the amazingly full feathered shanks from the Marans, the size and broad body of the Marans, but the tail of the Polish, and everything else in between.
I'm going to make some Olive Eggers from him. Because he is carrying half dark egg genes and half Tolbunt genes (both mottled and laced) yet full brown-red genes for making the Tolbunt color, I'm going to cross him with my Tolbunt x Ameraucana to get about a 25% chance of a Tolbunt colored OE. They'll vary of course, too, and some may very well have full crests, none, or clean legs, or feathered legs. . . Even if I don't get some olive layers, I'll still get a good chance of blue layers.
Here is my 4 month old pullet. She is a BCM as well but you have to look to find the speck of copper. She wouldn't come out of the weeds for a picture. I expect she will produce some dark eggs like my old hen since she is from the same flock. She'll be a special member of the flock as she survived a racoon attack.
Is this little lady a blue marans? We hatched a few bcm from a breeder and had a couple random green eggs from a friend. I know she has ee and bcm but they are not separated with breed or anything.
Illia, I was just asking about you some pages back. Welcome back! I love Mr. Polans! Funny how he took on the gold laced instead of the Tolbunt pattern. As for your cool weather, well
. My window AC froze up in the night, so now I'm trying to defrost it before the real heat of the day comes on. It's already 88* here, and the air is so thick it's hard to breathe. C'mon AC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
