Debbi~ Does this pullet look familiar to you???

Don't know if I have posted a photo of her yet or not....or I can't remember if I have anyway...

This is my very dark BCM girl like yours and Raven's and I think one of Poularde's. This gal has 1 copper hackle feather, she is just a tad older than your girl.

This is another one of Bill's daughters from this year...she just started laying. Cute tiny pullet eggs that remind me of her Davis lineage by the looks of the egg and it's unique speckling....Most of Bill's kids lay nice rich smooth eggs with little shiny factor.....my Davis gals all have nice shine factor and so does hers....unlike her blue cpr sister that I posted a few pages back, her eggs are like that of all of Bill's other daugters eggs have been.

She is a big girl...nice and tall. Not in love with her tail.....amount of feathers that is, but will continue to watch her for a while. Love her back.

Yes! That black girl looks just like my Olivia! She is such a sweet and mellow girl. She has been laying now as well. I should've taken a pic of her egg from yesterday, it was a beauty! Rather long yet, not small by any means, and a lovely, shiny, ruby color. She is a beefy gal too.

Hi,
Perhaps someone can help me here. I know there can be problems with continued Blue to Bluee breeding. I know there are several different kinds of blue genes. Here's a book from 1897. The author, as was common/fashionable in that era, writes with a "pen name". Perhaps this will be of some help as this is a blue breed. Or maybe not, if Blue Andalusian isn't the blue gene involved in Blue Marans.

1897 Dun, Silver ( perhaps a pen name ? )

Have you had eggs shipped to you before??? If so, did they take longer to get there and how did the hatch go?

I get eggs shipped express mail and can have them in as little as two days. I get low hatch rates but realize I am going to have to get a lot of eggs just to have a small starter flock.
I just got a box today with sone black copper marans eggs. If I get 3 to hatch I will consider it a great success. Lol!
Most of the eggs I have tried to hatch have come from east coast/mid west. Interested to see if west coast eggs have better results.

I am suspecting my Marans are older than I was told. A couple of my girls are are pinking up and growing larger combs and my boys have been crowing a while and I saw one mount a pinked up girl. when do they get sexually active? Mine are only 12-13 weeks old and suddenly started looking really good. I thought they where slow to mature??? What is up???

Pink. How old is that BCM in the first picture? She looks very much like my only BCM pullet from you. Only difference is mine has a partial carnation comb - sort of bunched up near the back. She has some coppering, more than one hackle feather, but not a whole lot. Very beefy in size at 20 weeks old. Wattles are getting larger and red as well as more size and color coming into her comb at this point. A very curious gal. She will approach me quickly and stay very near but does not like being touched much yet. She seems to rule my new flock of 14 birds...

DH was delighted to put his marans eggs into his first county fair today. Judging is tomorrow and he doesn't care what he gets, he's just happy to get to show them off!
After MUCH deliberation, we entered them into the "other" category because we didn't think it was fair putting them into the "brown" category with all the RIRs! we shall see what the judges have to say about it.
When we left, they were the only marans eggs. I'm sure he'll take a picture eventually!

Ok got a chance to take pics of my lil solid blue chick. It has one regular eye and one little eye.

regular eye

This eye is smaller and the eyelid is smaller.

Is this and example of the "blue gene" problem? Will it pass this on if bred?

A picture of my little brother with our Cuckoo Maran, Susan! He's been taking pictures of each of the chicks everyday and it is starting to get impressive, you can see the development from day 1 - day 18 with this girl (she is 18 days old currently). She is a really entertaining chicken, she doesn't trust me at all so when I have watermelon or mealworms will run up really fast, grab as much as she can fit in her mouth and run away as far as possible to eat it and then repeat the process. It is so cute to watch her. She also was the first one to sleep on the roost in her brooder and is always one of the first two or three chickens to try the new treats I give them. (bragging about chicks is fun)
