Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The boys didn't like their pictures taken so after 3 headed for cover. Too warm already to chase them out.

Looks to me that the cockerel with the big V in the middle of the comb also has a sprig. Oh pooh, guess he will have to go.

Sorry Snowbird, I have no idea where I got the name Don from .

Don is correct. When you go look at the Marans pick them up and look and make sure there are no problems with the Comb like a side sprig" small point on side of comb" if they do pass them on by as that is a DQ and you sure do not want that in your new flock. Good luck, Don

Don, Thank you for sprig info, now I have to go look at all my other chickens and see if any of them have it. LOL Susan

Hi Zanna,

I had 3 birds I hatched from Illia and all 3 were very strong and have been thriving. I rehomed the 2 cockerels due to sprigs but I have kept the pullet. I was going to do some single matings with her to see if she produces sprigs but alas I have no rooster (thanks to predators) so my entire breeding flock has turned into the breakfast pen (in more ways than one).

I suspect that something else is going on with your birds. Coccidiosis or a fungus maybe? I am just throwing things out there. Something is up. My experience with Marans is they are usually the hardiest birds in my flock. I hope someone else has suggestions for you. Crossing my fingers

Thanks for the input Bravo. One of my Marquisella babies had this issue 1 1/2 months ago and she suggested I treat for cocci so I treated all the youngsters just in case and she still slowly wasted away. So, this current girl has been treated for cocci but I know there are several strains................

Were you joking ? ? ?

Just checking to see if anyone is reading my posts. She has a nice long Back, how is the width. Where are these eggs possible from. Now the dark male is not what I like.

The male and the female are either from
our very own BYC Keara OR they are from Rodney Reeves who was one of the folks that repeatedly placed at Newnan.
Unfortnuately, I DON'T know which is which ......

Hey Lisa, was this one of the birds that had that feather triangle by the tail when she was younger?? Remember me telling you that the triangle=long back? Just wondered if she was one of them. All of mine that had that triangular cushion when young, tend to have nice long backs when older. She's a beauty!

Gosh, you guys were having a real party here this morning! It's been storming here all day, but glad for the 69* temps!

My hen that I operated on last night for that darned spiral is up and running around today. Swelling has gone down, and she looks to be on the mend. Can't find one of my roos this afternoon. I put everyone in the run early this evening since more storms are due in, and I noticed Pip refused to go in. That is usually a sign that someone else is missing in action. Sure enough, counting heads, one of Pink's cockerels is gone. Billy, the jet black roo, no signs of trauma, struggle, nothing, just gone. If he made the mistake of going into the woods like that one pullet did, well, that explains that. No telling what is hiding in the dense woods by the house. At least it wasn't another pullet...

I heard a young crow this morning. Oh brother, it was a Silkie chick! 6 weeks, 2 days old and crowing. What is it with all these males crowing early around here?? I know the Silkie folks won't believe it, most say they have to wait for eggs or crows to sex their birds, and it is usually around 8 months or better. Now...to find out which one it is!

No, the feather triangle ones were from my own stock and are laying and I am hatching their eggs out now.....
