Thanks Debbi! His name will be Kamden...not sure of the spelling but it's a nice name. He was suppose to be here on the 17th but we all know about scragglers and late hatchers, don't we?!?

Yes we do!

Don't think it would be wise though to compare his Mom to a Little Giant though!

I should talk. I carried my son for almost a full 10 months!

I was surprised he didn't come out with shoes on, gees...

they have a coop with a large fenced area, the nesting boxes are in the coop. There is a broody hen who is sitting on 6 eggs (not laid by her) and I have seen one of the other hens try to join her in that particular nest box. There are 4 other boxes available. Because we have coyotes next door and a hawk which lives in a tree in the middle of our blueberry farm, I cannot let them roam totally free. So, should I just lock them in the coop?

Chances are they are still put out about being moved and getting use to their new surroundings. How long have you had them now?
They should figure it out...but then again I say this and I have a Barnevelder hen that will be 1.5 years old and she has only ever laid her egg in the nest box like 6 times. I wouldn't necessarily lock them up in the coop...if they do decide to get into a nest box they could upset the broody that is setting and we all know what upset broodies are like.

I would just leave them and let them work it out.

My bad, when I say "coop" I am referring to coop and pen area - - -not just coop. So, NO do not lock them up in the "coop" area only - - I meant lock them up in the coop / run. In other words do not let them free range.

I agree with Pink, they may just need more time. I jsut went through a rough week of everyone suddenly dropping eggs everywhere but on the nest because I had a very grumpy broody that was running everyone off the nesting boxes. She has been moved to a separate area and the hens are returning to the nesting boxes....

Ok I know this photo is LONG OVERDUE but here is a pic of what a side sprig can look on a hen. Look at the top center of where her comb flops over. It is a little hard to see but definitely there. She is going in with the layers because she is sweet and lays me a nice big brown egg every day

I had a new blue copper roo who had the tiniest bump on his comb way way down where it attatched to his head and the feathers from his head kinda covered it up so I didn't notice it right away. The result was 1 female and 3 splash males with side sprigs!!!
Always check Everywhere on the combs and run you fingertips over them if you suspect any unusual areas before you breed them. Look good down near the base of the comb where it attatches to thier heads.

Looks like a partial carnation comb to me. I'll try to get a pic of a MEGA CRANATION comb that one of the little guys has. It would make the Pene's blush with envy!!

Sorry my cable box keeps going off and on LOL! Its on there now.

Yup, that be a big sprig! And a huge comb on that girl.

That is a messed up comb ace lol. I have one guy who has a deadly weapon on the back of his head! He is a marans x OE x marans. That makes up for some pretty olive eggs for the females and really jacked combs on the male offspring.
