Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

No the Splash roo is not from you only have the 3 birds from you. His comb is still suspect so far so good but it just looks "odd" at the back still watching. His hackles were very light till molt and now seem to be getting dark from the top down and no white just a lite blue showing.

Ditto....except the one I had was an inverted leader spike. It has me really confused, and I tell you - it can be super frustrating working with such a new breed!

Oh Wynette, I know. This seems like an issue that I wouldn't even want to touch, honestly. I originally hatched these girls only to be layers of beautiful dark eggs and hadn't given any thought to breeding anything from them until Pink started drooling over my Blue Copper girl... then I saw her picture of Lil' Bill and started drooling over him and the idea of their potential offspring... LOL, lots of drool going around that day.

Anyways, I wouldn't have the space honestly required to do test/single breedings to figure out who exactly carried the stupid comb.

So these girls are just gonna have to be okay with being layers! I don't think they'll mind.

Pink, I hear ya, I keep checking Ponyo's comb everyday now, just to make sure she hasn't sprouted a sprig or something.

So far so good!

Pink, you must have missed my "stupid comb" post a few pages back... it looks as if my only BC girl sprouted a partial carnation comb overnight.

I don't know how closely related my Blue Copper girl Ponyo is to this BC hen, I know they came from the same pen but as I understood it there were multiple roos in the pen that produced them... anyways, I don't know if I should try to breed either of them now out of fear of passing the potential stupid comb on.

Le sigh.

Hey, Jeremy. Don't quote me, but most of us do not use birds with this defect. It's taken a LONG time to get it bred out, I'd hate to see someone work it back in.... JMO, though.

I agree it is very hard to narrow down....all of a sudden this year I get stupid combs after the introduction of the birds from GFF and now am trying to weed it out. It is both depressing and dissappointing and I have had to cull some very nice birds.

I know exactly what you mean. I tell you, when I saw the inverted spike issue, I sort of "took a vacation" from concentrating so much on my Marans, and looked to another of my breeds that I don't have so many issues with. Of course I realize that with Marans, they are so new, there will be issues LONG LONG after I'm dead & buried, but it's nice to be able to continue working with poultry, just with another breed to sort of freshen it up a bit.

That Ponyo is too nice of a bird for me to not want to test her out....no harm in testing her.

Who couldn't drool all over her????? She is superb in my book! Crossing my fingers that she NEVER gets the stupid comb.

Here are a couple of close ups so you can see what I mean.

I am taking a vacation from my Wellies this year.....not because of issues, but because it is just nice to be able to work on something different for a while.

Whatcha mean by "odd"....from what I can see, this IS the nicest comb I have ever seen produced out of Gnarles.

I can't see any signs of sprigs or carnation. Going to keep my fingers crossed that it stays that way!
