Good grief! I know that....been trying to get my nephew nailed down to butcher too...he said he would 2 weeks ago when he time off of work. Now he is back to work and it will be several more weeks until he can do it, hence to whole reason I will have time to test Gnarles one more time with these 3 BCM hens.

Ha! I turned all my roos out this morning. Think a hunter will mistake them for deer??? No luck so far!

It's been so windy here, deer season has been quiet. Not at all like the typical years where it sounds like the beginning of WW3!

Pink-so I should probably plan on testing the 1 blue copper girl that came from you.....maybe have to take a walk outside again and take a closer look at her comb.

Yes it can be seen.

I know exactly how it makes you feel to see them too.

Yes, I know you know how I feel! I just about want to puke everytime I go out to the run. NOT the feeling I was going after, for sure.

And now it strikes yet again. Those German New Hamps or BLRW are looking better to me by the day!

My guess is that all offspring that came from Gnarles crossed to the BCM (which are the birds I got from Florida) will have to be tested. Maybe just keep her for a layer. The down side to testing her will be that what ever bird you test her too will have to be carrying the gene as well if she presents a normal looking comb, or you will never know, because I am finding that it (carnation) only reveals as Debbi has stated, when 2 copies of the gene are present. Sprig I believe will and can present even if it is only one parent with the gene, but I may be wrong here, hoping someone will set me straight. If I even made any sense at all.
All I know is that it was very upsetting to find that Gnarles also carries it........

Pink ~ That is why I am holding onto one pullet as a "control" bird here. Solo, does NOT express the carnation comb, but I am quite certain she carries the one gene for it. She will be marked and put into the layer flock, and will be test mated with EVERY new stinkin' roo I get here! If the comb pops up, out he goes! I'm also considering holding back a test roo too. Seeing as how he came from one of the hens that carried the gene, yet when bred to Clyde, he does NOT express the carnation. That way I could test all new pullets as well. Such a PIA to have to go through all of this trouble, room, and work, just to get something decent to breed!

sorry to hear that he carries it...

, so I will figure that she is a carrier and mark my notes as such. I am testing my blue cuckoo rooster to see if he carries this gene so far the girls we hatched are looking okay but we are still watching carefully.
