Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

An interesting note....Meyer Hatchery just sent me a "Special" bulletin for pre-ordering spring hatches. I will go on the record and say that I have had what I felt were good experiences with Meyer Hatchery. That is, I have had a 25% loss rate with their chicks (1 in 4 dies before 6 months) and the one order of chicks that were lost in Colorado and arrived 100% dead - that order was completely replaced at no charge.
Back to the "Special" bulletin... they are selling Black Copper Marans - that they say are from Wade Jean-Bev Davis stock far $9.48 per chick (females).
I just thought I would throw this out there to see what kind of response it generates. I know that Meyer Hatchery advertises on BYC and I have nothing bad to say about them. As a hatchery, I feel like I have always recieved good service and I have been happy with my past dealings with Meyer Hatchery.

TSC has it for less than $2.50 a roll here in all sorts of colors. Even camo for when ya don't want 'em to see what you attached to their leg

It is probably a good hatchery, but to me $10 a chick is pretty steep for a pig in the poke...... so to speak. The few really good breeders that I know of sell very good chicks for much less than that....other breeds, not Marans...... Marans are in the "license to steal" category. They probably do have those strains....just like everyone else that sells Marans chicks, but I doubt that they look anything like the stock Wade had or that Bev has.

I can't believe what BYC people pay for birds. To me it is best to just deal with the BREEDER themselves and pay for adult birds. Even if they are $200+ a bird, in the end you know what you have...or at least visually know what you have. It appears that with Marans you always end up with more than you bargained for and it is not always in a good way. I have seen a tremendous improvement in the breed in just two years, so eventually you folks will have less problems. Every breed has problems. I wouldn't be doing this if it was easy.

Just don't throw your money away.

Oh, SNAP, there goes the neighbor! j/k

With all mega-hatchery birds you are going to receive birds of lesser quality. There is no two ways around it. I have ordered, at one time or other, from most of the well known hatcheries. As you mentioned, most were nice, healthy birds but compared to quality stock didn't really compare.

I think this is why its important for the smaller scale Marans aficionados to truly focus on producing quality birds that lay the darkest egg possible.

Folks here are MORE than willing to be generous if they know they are dealing with folks truly interested in promoting Marans. x 10.

Oh my, I am worried about new people to chickens being taken by tem being offered through a hatchery to only get medium brown eggs. Very glad we have climbed on board with this thread and improving the line. We have the new sop book on its way, I saw mentioned that not all the updates are in it. Is there something else I should print for reference in addition to the book?

Sorry can I jump in with a Marans gender question?
