Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks everyone for the comments. Here is a picture of Harley with some light on him. His tail has been pulled by my Border Collie, everytime Harley is seen jumping a hen the dog thinks he is hurting the hen and will knock him off. Does someone have a picture of a squirl tail or are we looking at one. I don't plan on breeding these just eating eggs, but this is fun

I agree that the tail coverts are long, however I wouldn't classify that as a "squirrel tail"
Biochick I would love an opportunity to critique your bird... Could you take a profile shot. That is a nice looking rooster. If that is okay with you... I will be kind... I would love to see his qualities and it is difficult with the angles we have of him... I suspect he is a really nice specimen and would like a chance to see that.

Mossy will go away most of the time.... Is this a mature hen? (math ace)

Nice post Kathy

Thanks Kathy. I'll try to get more pictures tonight. I'm at work today I uploaded the pictures a few days ago and just got a chance to post today. The hens are 7 and 6 months old. Will the colors change after they molt?

35% maybe 40% I do what is called a dry hatch I'll let you know next week how it works on my own unshipped eggs I have 7 in there I've had good luck normally if the egg is good it hatches I have very few that are completely formed that don't pip I had one hatch where they pipped but didn't zip but I couldn't get the humidity to stay high enough so I had to help a couple they were shrink wrapped

Ok - - snowbird, this is what I had understood before. So, I was not planning on breeding my mossy girls. THEN, I read and must of misunderstood the following :

Quote:
Geebs, my girls are 9 months old. . . . I got them as chicks around christmas 2009. 3 blue copper marans. . . . One with a couple of white springs on her head and light blue coloring (just sorry as they come . . . .). The second and third have mossy coloring to the body. One has nice coppering at the hackles, the other has very light coppering. ALL together - - - THREE duds for quality breeding !

I have one beautiful colored Black copper marans. All my eggs are riding in her basket ( so to speak) for getting some decent chicks to start my program with. She has smaller statue than the other 3, but my big boy roo should help bulk up her offsprings size.

Geebs could you clarify your earlier statement . . . How will the mossy hens work well with the rooster ?

THANKS everyone for your help - - - and I can now see that Harley does NOT have a squirrel tail. The feathers were so long and curly that I thought that was what I was seeing. It is not about the length or curl of the feathers. The feathers should not cross an imaginary perpendicular line (vertical) with an endpoint on at the base of the tail - - - THE PICTURE helped a LOT - - THANKS.

OK - - - the APA standards - - where do you purchase this at? ? When will the NEW one come out that has the NEW marans standard in it ? ?

Let me correct my statement...My bad... I meant Overly red not mossy... Two completely different things... My apologies guys... It was a brain faux paux ... Thanx for catching it and calling me on it. Again sorry guys... Mossy at adulthood not good... overly red/copper still useable.

I was making an assumption that the person I was talking to was using the word mossy to describe an overly red bird... I should have clarified.. This is why I want to see pix of the birds... (I hope this makes sense)...It should have read mossy to indicate that I was repeating the original term that the person I was speaking to was using.

Math Ace It is okay to only have two good birds.... If the breeding works between the two you may end up ahead of us all!!!! You will certainly have a reliable outcome.

Debbi and Mathace - I did not read this post till Sunday afternoon, but you are not alone. I feel I have raised my 3 sons to do the right thing even if it is not easy or immediately rewarding, like winning. So I personally would not use tactics to win. Either my birds are good or they are not. And I am sure many others stand with you guys!

Dave
