Ya.... I even rounded her beak... So it wouldn't be sharp.... No help... I thought it was safe to let her brood once she couldn't break them with her beak... that is when she went to eating them as they hatched... YUCK... bad bird.

Hi - I'm new to this thread and to marans. I started going through all those pages, but I got bogged down around 35! Besides, a lot of the conversation seemed to be about black coppers so anyway... I hatched some cuckoo marans eggs under a broody hen last week. They are cute little fluff balls, which have been scrutinized endlessly to determine who has a larger diffuse spot vs. a smaller distinctive spot, gray vs. black, etc. and thought someone here might be able to help. I was also surprised to hatch a couple of yellow ones. Looked that up on here and understand that it is recessive and can be hidden under the cuckoo gene. So here are a couple pictures. Any input on the sex of the chicks would be great. I would also be curious to know if the yellow ones are 'wheaten' or 'white' or something else.

Thanks a lot!

Nice looking peeps, Tracy. The yellow ones sure look Wheaten to me.

Of the Cuckoos, I can't tell if I see one, two or three pullets in that photo. The pullets will be darker in general have have a more well-defined white spot on their heads, as well as a black stripe down the front of their legs.

Hi Les! Thanks for joining us!

Thanks all - finally got an e-mail - seems I won 5 awards:

"Your top set took Best of Black Coppers, Best Overall and People's choice. Your second set ... the spotted ones, took second BC and Overall!"

Funny thing is, though they are still laying after months of triple digit heat and humidity a lot of their paint chutes are empty and they are laying eggs without any coating on them. I managed to get two sets that I thought were worthy of competition but not up to full capability. I didn't even take pictures before I sent them off. One set was very dark brown and had tiny black specks on it. I thought they were the prettiest but seems the judges thought they were not consistent enough (so I've heard - I haven't seen score cards yet). They were more "egg" shaped, with a pointy end but not excessively so. The second set, I didn't really think was that great. They were a reddish brown but nice and oval. Seems the judges prefer that look more. I didn't think they were dark enough to compete. Shows what I know...........

Time to feed my "girls" some extra scratch - they are real crack heads.
