What do you do, add broody hormones to all your stock, or what? My Marans and Wheaties (from you) are both a broody lot!

OH!!!!! Yes the Marans from CP are broody too!!!! I had a Blue Copper Marans chick that I hatched out from CP, also a broodymonster!!! She lives on a farm with a good friend in a town not to far north of me, she also lays a very lovely colored egg...... when she's not broody! Waiting news to hear how latest hatch went.

2 of the broodiest of broodiest hens I have here is a Delaware from you Kathy and one of my 3 year old Marans hens.

I think it's the Wheaties fault....they are a bad influence! Yours hang together. The only Marans I ever had go broody was living in the Ameraucana pen....all were broody at the same time. They took turns sitting on the eggs and raised the chicks together. Here is the Marans waiting her turn...

Out of 27 Wheaten Am pullets and hens, 18 went broody last year....

I am quite sure you sent me eggs from the broody ones. I think ALL of my girls are practicing now. They sure don't want to come off the nests. I have to say though, my Marans was a good mama, and this Wheatie is doing a great job, too. She had those chicks outside in the rain yesterday. Well, not IN the rain, but it was wet out. They were just totally happy. I love watching broodies with their chicks.

Hi Arielle! I don't follow the question sorry.....are you talking about how much time between roosters to clear out rooster juice from the hens before putting in a new one?
If talking about the time frame in which hens will be clear of stuff from one rooster so that you can swap boys out for breeding........I personally wait 6 weeks before setting any eggs after switching out roosters, those girls can hang on to the roosters stuff for a looooooong time.

SIX WEEKS ????? That is the longest I have heard of--definitely makes sure of who's the daddy!

Thank, Pink. Sorry the question was vague. Sounded good to me at the time I wrote it ! LOL

APA Judge and prolific breeder, Troy Laroche is in the 3 day camp. That's what he told us at the seminar. Several folks questioned him on that one including a woman whose rooster was killed. She claimed to be getting fertile eggs 12 days later. But Troy stuck by his "3 or 4 days".

Debbi had chicks from the original rooster at 2 week separation.
THe answer remains a mystery.

I guess I better get those girls segregated immediately. DH and I startd today on the breeding pens but changed the layout, so he is off to HD tonight and we will start and finish the breeder pen tomorrow!!!! We will, We will. We better.

One could always run test eggs- collecting at so many day intervals once the rooster has been removed and incubating and checking fo fertility.

That is a great idea!!! No point in checking before 2 weeks.

I would think I could just open a fresh egg and look for the classic bulls eye and incubate a few a few days to double check.

So do ya'll remember the chicks from my New Years Day hatch? I was very excited to get those eggs as they were suppose to be from my Bill Sr's original blood lines, but come to find out, the lady I got Bill from called me a short time ago to let me know that they were indeed not from that stock but from a second batch of birds that she says are pure Jeane birds............me don't thinks that the case, LOL!
Check a couple of them out.

Chick 1- Hatched with a cinnamon head and green legs.......

That same chick yesterday.........................................................

This little chick had a very dark cinnamon colored head (it was barely noticeable unless you had the chick in hand) and greenish legs.

As this chick has grown he also sprouted a couple stubs (aside from the one tiny one on the toe that you can barely see in the above photo) on the shank that is showing, I have never seen that before. Weird!

Sorry...but I will have to come back and finish this post later.....having issues with site.

DId a little more searching on fertility. This is quoted from DOn, aka Snowbird. Debbi, you are not alone.

To be sure I always let the hen lay out after taking the male away. If you want to go by days usually 15 days is considered safe. I have seen game hens taken away from a rooster and lay as many as 15 eggs and have all of them hatch. Don
