Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have a question, when my first batch of FBCM were getting on 4 months, I noticed some were really ghostly looking in the face and other were not, and I have some now that are really black. Is there a "LOOK" that is preferred that I should breed toward?

It is softcover and not quite as expensive as Christie noted if you order direct from Holland. I paid $120. The loads of full colour pictures make it totally worth it. I haven't seen another book on genetics anything like it. I'll let you know what I think when I've had a real chance to dig into it.

ok guys...need support. I am going to bed with my marans chicks someWHERE between Kentucky and Hawaii. They need to arrive in my little town post office by tomorrow or we are in critical stage with the chicks. If they are not on my island by tonight there is no way they get to me by Wednesday. They hatched sunday, shipped out monday Express mail... USPS is not updating their tracking info.

There are 20 babies in that box. I am probably not going to be able to sleep tonight. Ok, I am sure they are here...USPS just is slacking on the tracking info. Gosh I hope those babies are sitting in a box 1 1/2 hours away from me.

Worse case is they come on thursday. What are the chances of them making it that long? I have the brooder on, electrolytes in their water, ran the chick feed through the food processor, egg yolks mashed up... chick emergency room all set up. lol

Christie, one thing the USPS is not known for is reliable updates on the tracking.
If I were you, I would go to the post office this morning and wait for them.
Did you let them know you were expecting them?
My PO already has met the chicken lady, and strangely enough, I am welcome at the back door (where customers are not allowed) as long as I bring eggs!

Oh, I just re read, your post office is 1 1/2 hrs away?
I would bring electrolyte water, and go get them.
I hope you aren't going to wait for the truck to deliver them.

And It is better to open the box there, to show the postal service the great job they did..... just in case they are insured.

Unfortunately, you don't have much choice over there.

Good luck!

here I am up at 3am...still no change on the tracking info.
The airport is 1 1/2 hours away. My post office is only two minutes away. I live in a tiny town and the girls at my post office have known for months that I have chicks coming....oddly enough I am getting a chicken lady reputation as well...lol I will be stalking the back door in the morning... hope no one calls the cops.

So sorry to hear your Mother is in the hospital but glad she went! Hope you get her home soon.
Sorry about your Irish Setter too! Your avatar always makes me smile I know how much that hurts to lose your girl but sometimes the only thing you can do is let them go.
Your Splash girls are so pretty I just love the Splashes!

Finally got another chance to edit and now can add a few more pictures of my group of Marans chicks hatched 11-12-2011.

Things have been crazy around our house lately- trying to get work items done for the end of the month and then last week we had to put our Irish Setter down- she was having health issues to start with but just went down hill and didn't leave us with any other choice. To add to that my mom is in the hospital- she wasn't feeling good and upon going in the tests that were run showed a brain aneursym- she is doing better, they are continuing to monitor her but let me tell you the 1st 2days this week were extremely stressful and scary. They have her starting PT and we will see what day they will let her go home- my dad has been going back and forth everyday and my sister is close enough to go everyday too-so she fills in more details after she leaves the hospital.

Pink here is a shot showing the 2 girls we ended up with! Both splashes...

Here is another cockeral from the group- have to go back out and look at his comb again as 1 of the 3 Blues has a wave in the front part.

I have a couple more pictures but can't tell from the pictures which band color they are, so I will have to go and look. Please feel free to give my opinions- this is the group that I am not sure what direction I will be taking with them.
