Tala is there any way you could post some additional photos of this hen - - - a close up on her comb and a head on shot - - - PLEASE , , , PRETTY PLEASE . ..

Well, I just randomly take pictures when I go to feed them. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm nuts! lol

On the left is the side of my RIR roo, and a BCM girl that doesn't have much coppering, 3 white leghorns that need to molt are in the center, and the same BCM girl is on the right
(her brother a BCM roo is outside the pen, blurry)

Their eggs are not just super-amazing, but I like them

There are only 3 in this pic that I think are from the black coppers and I'd guess them to be 5 to 6 if I had a chart to look at (besides online)
the other dark ones are from the Cuckoo Marans and they are pretty light for Marans, 4s or maybe 5s at best. (and the pic was taken with flash, they look better in person)

Wow, what a difference in those two hens in the hackle coloring. If that roo is not a sibling of the hen without coppering - - - He would make an excellent color choice for a mate to her. He should help give her LOTS of coppering.

It looks like your hen with coppering has that famous 5 point comb.

Hi

If we get the black coppers accepted we will work on getting other colors accepted as well. The wheaten will be next followed by the cuckoo and white. These are the colors that have already started going through the qualifying process.

Bev do you get the Pinched tail thing... I am not understanding it still... I must be thick headed.. Does this hen have a "pinched tail"

I think she looks like she is wearing a petticoat.. I don't know if there is a standard for this.... but there should be... Call it the Gone with the Wind look!!! lol

If you're a member of the club I would think someone would allow you to mail the eggs to them and they would take them to the show. That's what they did for the Wisconsin one. I'm brand spanking new to all of this - learning as I go. Thought I would test the waters by first sending eggs and see how they did. If nothing else, it got my farm name "out there" and got a bunch of orders. Though it wasn't a very big egg competition - it was a huge international poultry show with over 2,000 birds and lots of people, all of whom stopped by the Marans table and saw the eggs - many of them may have never seen or heard of Marans before so it was also good for promoting the breed.

Ruth, If you are looking to see how good your eggs really are contact the Girls that set up the egg table at the Ohio National and send them some eggs. They are with MCCusa club and I am sure Bev Davis can give you the contact info.

Hi Don

I think Monique will be sending eggs to every show and putting us all to shame.

Geebs, I don't think that hen has a pinched tail. There was a similar discussion with Walt over on one of the Delaware threads. It was said that a hen's tail should look like an upside down V when viewed from behind. When looking at the hen from the side you should be able to see multiple tail feathers, at least 4-5 (maybe 3-4, I honestly can't remember, I'll have to dig up that convo) feathers spread to make the tail.

The pinched look is when a hen's tail feathers look as if they're "bunched" together, like someone literally gabbed them all and mushed them together. If you're looking from the side you will only see a couple tail feathers in the profile view, held together.

Right Walt, correct me if I am wrong.

ETA: Here's a picture of a Delaware with what I believe is a pinched tail.

Here's an example (IMO) of what the tail should look like.

Hi

They are selling Marans at $12 per chick if I send the order.

Bev

OH! Bev, so we can place an order through you for the reduced price of $12 per chick? Do we just need to PM you to do this? THANKS so much!!

Hi

Yes, and I'll just pass the order on. I don't know why they have it set up like that.

Bev
