What you describe with eye color is what I have experienced ( in my little bitty experience) too. When I picked up my two yound roos they were about a month old. The one had pumpkin eyes already and the other was black as coal. I purchased him and took the risk that the eyes would chang with time. At four months, his were still black as coal.
My liitle girls were that greenish / gray color and changed to orange as they matured.
That you for letting us use you photos to carry on Don's tail lesson.
I've looked at all of my chicks eyes since hatch, and I have yet to have a black eyed bird. All that I have had, have a grey/green tint to them at birth. All of the 14 weekers have a "pumpkin" colored eye, all of the younger birds have the grey/green eye that is getting a bit of yellow to it. Pip's eyes at 9 weeks are a "goldish" color. I believe his eyes will darken with age to an orange/red color. All of these birds are of the Wade Jeane line, although the older birds are supposedly a cross of Davis/Jeane lines. That said, I've only had 10 chicks hatch! My turn is coming, I'm sure!
