Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well Vicki, get to feeling better! Allergies is one malady I don't suffer with. Lots of folks around here are saying this is the worst year they have ever seen for allergies, I guess the early warmth really kicked them into gear? Put on some sun glasses and stay with us!

Ok Barb, I caved! Took the 2 Silkies out of the bator! That last one was a real soccer player, and I didn't want him to do damage to my SG egg. Guess what??? A SECOND SG egg is rocking hard!!!

Slick and anyone else - sorry for the lost chicks.
I lost a full tray of gorgeous eggs this week (some of my first "real" eggs from my this year's generation) b/c a friend's kid got into the incubator... :barnie

Thanks! It wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't had been our very first hatch and my wife's first experience watching chicks coming into this world. She had made it routine checking them every morning, so she found them. Wasn't a pretty morning at my house.

Wow! and I hate that you lost them all. We all learn from our experiences, so all we can do is pick ourselves up, dust our butts off and try again.

I gotta say, this last batch of BCM chicks is assimilating much quicker with the flock. Either the pullets and hens are getting used to seeing new birds come in, or my mind is tired of fretting over them so much? Probably a combo. They've been in the run with Clyde and a couple of pullets, and in the last day or so, with some of the older hens. All look fine and eating well. Tonight, I called them, and they even put themselves into their crate! Ahhh, peace in the valley, I love it!

Oh so sorry she had to go through that. All that anticipation, and then a crash and burn. She will be fascinated to watch them hatch, I know I sure was, and still am! Just tell her in advance, to keep some paper towels by the bator to wipe off the nose prints!

I wish you much better luck with your next go round!

It has probably happened to all of us some way or another. My grandkids turned the bator off for a day or more, and then they turned the hatcher off.... how the chicks hatched is beyond me. I have lost hatches over stupid stuff I have done too.... the worst was the thermostat losing its mind and going to 113. then I left eggs in the car, they are all clear.

Are you sure they are lost? They are really resilient. unless it is 113.

Katelyn! $2/chick? Please don't tell me for Marans! And that whole incubator incident really stinks!

Debbie, congrats on the hatch! We set eggs today. 3 OEs under my broody, 8? At my sons school and I've got 33 more to set tomorrow, 15 English Orps will go in the bator at my sons school and the rest will stay here and be turned by hand. Has anyone here ever controlled their humidity by weighing the eggs and shooting for a total weight loss of 11% -13%?

Marans news: my neighbor has cuckoos, I didn't get to see them

Non Marans news: we picked up our honey bees tonight!!!

We want bees! I can't wait to get moved to the farm so we can have ALL the wants we have now.

for a SG roo (right?)

I have chicks hatching tomorrow (we did it again) .... some cuckoos can't wait to see what I get. These are covered by my reg cuckoo roo with feathered legs. I will only be keeping the feather legged ones. I had a cuckoo pullet that was tormented to death the other day and the other 2 were roos. Sold them today for $10 each

I still have the reg cuckoo that hatched from my goldens. I need to find her.... she must be looking like a barred rock with feathered legs.

She came from a great colored egg so she may be my key to egg color and feathered legs.... might try her with the NICE splash cuckoo roo and see what they make.

My project this week or next is to TAG EVERYONE permanently!

Thanks, and congrats on your bees! That's something I've always wanted to do, but doubt it will ever happen. I love honey, especially orange blossom honey!

I've not tried the weighing method yet, maybe next hatch. I am convinced though, that the dry method is the way to go. I just hate to handle the eggs too much, so I only candle twice. Once at around 8 days, and then at lockdown. Guess I will try weighing them before I set them, at 8 days, and then lockdown...

Yes, one great, Naked Neck is all I need. Now that another egg is rocking, it would be ok if that one was a girl! Gees, did I really just say that???

What are you using for permanent tags??
