Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I had a house full of chicks last winter-- master breeder had advised no fall hatching. I should have listened!! Summer hatched poults could handle the weather as they put on a bigger body by fall.

So I'm curious too?

I dread AUgust. THe hottest month, and school starts.

THere is another plant that makes a banana custard fruit--paw paw. May have another name. ANyone try or grow that one?
Yes, Paw-paws grow wild out here, usually near creeks and rivers. Seems like everyone knows where the best trees are too, cause you can hardly find any fruit any more! I know where there is a lone tree that is well hidden, and off the beaten path. This year, I'm getting to it!

May grow my own tree from the seeds too!

Arielle, Go back a page or so where I responded to your post about the Davis/Jeane cross. I have had nothing but crap from this combo, and that's been 5 different hatches!

CountryFried ~ I agree! The best birds I have here are the Presley/Jeane birds! They have their faults, but I would not hesitate to bring in some pure CH birds, and keep a few of them pure to that line!!

Do you mind sharing the faults of the CH birds? I know no bird is perfect, but it helps to know what a particular line is prone for. But I am having fun learning and improving as I go.

I just culled 2 more Jeane/Davis cross birds today cleaning house...

So far, and I am about 20 months in with these Presley/Jeane crosses, the only real thing that bothers me is the white feathers that keep popping in and out. Another thing, and this may just be with my flock, and I only have 3 of these, is the mahogany hackle/saddle feathers, and the lack of copper altogether on the hen. My hen could have a wider tail and also be bigger for my likes. The two roos are a lot alike, yet different. Clyde is a higher stationed bird, and his back could be longer. Roy is a lowrider and thicker for his size. He has the better coloring in the hackles, but the saddle feathers are more mahogany, so he's not quite balanced as far as color. Both have great eye color! Both have excellent shank/toe feathering! Both have very docile temperaments, and with some of the other roos I've had here, that means a lot to me! They had one other brother that got all the color, but wouldn't you know, he had a wry tail! The other hen that died traveling to the woods of no return, was of course, the nicer of the two hens. She also had nice leg feathering, and was somewhat larger and stouter than the remaining girl. Both boys also have nice combs, but each is a bit different too. Roy has a 5 point comb, but could have a better blade, and he has a slight thumbprint. Clyde's comb has 6 points, but the nicer, stand off the neck, smooth blade, very even, and I like his comb. So that's pretty much the faults I can think of at the moment, the ones that irk me the most. Both boys have deep, wide bodies, and throw that to their chicks. They also pass on leg feathering, station, and crows!

One Clyde son sounded just like his father, I knew right away who his dad was! I would like to get some pure CH Marans here, either BCMs or Wheatens.

Hope everyone survived the heat today; 97 here in the shade, and fairly humid!! No breeze either which made it worse. Took the hose out to the run to see if I could hose down some chooks with a light mist. All the Marans beat feet to the coop like I was dousing them with acid! The Silkies, even the young ones I just put out, came running out of their coops and were literally dancing in the mist! Maybe they aren't so dumb afterall??

Hey guys I just have a lil question...
Ive always wanted a BCM roo because i think they are just GORGEOUS., but instead when the opportunity arose, I accepted a day old cuckoo/golden cuckoo marans cull (non feathered legs).
Hes turning out alright, taller than heck...Id have liked to see a lot more gold by now but its a project bird so whatever. My question is that he is four months old now and has the tinyest comb and wattles. Of all the pictures Ive seen I feel they should be a lot bigger by now. Is he a slow grower or is he doomed to a life of comb inadequacy? I really held out on getting a large roo for a long time because I can only have one, and i wanted him to be the biggest most gorgeous colorful gigantic combed beauty ever. So far were batting a thousand with comb and color, LOL. (plus his personality sucks...cant get anywhere near him!) At least hes got legs for days. Heres Gregory Peck.

It gets so lonely in here sometimes!
What kind of project were they doing with these birds? I don't have Cuckoos, but that bird looks to me like it's got some Game fowl in it?? Really tight hard feathers, and those long legs! Can't see the comb, what type is it? I'm not seeing any saddle feathers, or hackles for that matter, it looks henny feathered to me? Someone else with Cuckoos will chime in, but body type alone tells me that is not a pure Marans.

The look is not right to me either. Game was something I didn't think of. I do think it is a roo... he has some gold in his wings. Not a golden cuckoo really... looks like a cuckoo with gold leakage.

My heritage BR is leggy like that but he is growing into his legs and is getting a nice wide body to go with the legs.

I only have pics of my Splash Cuckoo and he looks nothing like that. But he was mature when I got him and I have not grown up a cuckoo roo yet. But I don't see any difference in them as chicks.
