Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Wynette, I agree with most of what you say. The number of spikes would not be a deal breaker. I would not use a male with thumbprint unless I didn't have anything.

LC is asking general questions more than specific questions. There will always be faults show up regardless of how good the parent stock . I will say one thing and it has been proven over and over. You can raise more good type fowl out of a really good pair than you can from a big yard of culls.

I would not use a bird with a DQ regardless if I had to discontinue the flock. Junk produces Junk.
Don, although I would prefer not to use one with a thumbrint, or a wave, or a slight flop, IF the bird had really good type, I would use it. That's just me. I feel like there are so very few out there with good type and size, to me, personally, that is paramount. I will not use a small bird, nor a bird without good conformation. To me, that is the foundation, and you are right - junk produces junk.

Wynette, Anyone using a bird with any of the faults should not breed to a hatch mate or any of the off spring as that will only multify the fault gene.

Hope you are enjoying the nice weather.

Well I will post the 3 Roos that I have again. The first couple pictures are the 2 roo culls that I thought.

The Black due to Thumbprint comb, he has a point coming out inbettween two other points. Also lack of leg feathering(which I think would be simple enough to fix.

Blue do to split wing. Comb is decent.

All three of my roos act like turkeys when I come in the coops. They hold their tails way up and try and start hearding me around. Quite funny. So, I know for a Fact they dont have squirrel tail. When they are relaxed and hanging with the girls they posture is great. The third roo is the best I have right now and In my opinion is the best. His coloring is great to me and he is built like a tank. He is huge at 4 months. There are a couple of comb issues but I decided to keep him for now. What confuses me is the issues he has with his comb, I have seen others on here with the same thing and they are listed as nice birds. I have also seen a show winning cock with the same thing. Dont get it.

Anyway. I have the 2 roos up on craigslist for free right now. I cant bring myself to kill them right now. The Blue is my Sons so I will have to figure out a way to tell him that hes going bye bye!

clown, do you have a close-up of the one in the background in the 2nd picture? I think I am late to the party in giving any feedback, but his underline looks good to me, as does his topline. His tail angle is a wee bit steep, but not squirrel by any means. And his angle of back is perfect. He is dark, though...but it could be the light, it appears a bit dark our, maybe dusk? If you posted closer pics, let me know & I'll scroll back. And of course, these are just my opinions.

Don, heck YES I'm enjoying the weather! I lost a few birds in the heat, but it seems they were ones that were not as strong...I have not lost any further since that first very hot day, but boy, am I glad the weather is more "normal" today. We're getting good rain today, too. Not sure it will help the crops - much has been lost this year. Sigh.

LC, I fail to understand how you think BC in the last picture is better than BC in first picture. BC in first picture has much better Marans type than the last BC. If they both have comb faults just forget about that for a minute and look at the overall Marans type you have here..

Lately I feel like I know nothing either.

I will try and get some tonite if I get a chance. I took those in the evening before it rained so It wasnt really bright out. He has some nice coloring coming in. Again they are like 4 months. Looooong ways to go on the growing.

Don, are you referring to the black copper in the background of the middle picture?

rollout/trap nests - are you using your barrels? There is a thread on here by member Opa with plans for a rollout nest box, I wonder if they might be helpful to you in making your trap nests/rollouts?

Ok, If you would could you please school me then, combs and tail angle aside. Again I know they do not have squirrel tail. I also understand that In each picture they always pose differently. My expierence with Marans has been listening to you guys and reading everyones comments on here. Also photos and the SOP. I have the line and tail angle down on what it should look like. But the body size I heard was suppose to be beefy. I guess Im uninformed then on the body frame. Here is a photo a couple of months ago of the same roo that I do believe you said you liked.
