Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have been thinking lately do any of you worm or delouise your marans. Do not remember anyone talking about it . These two things sure have a lot to do with raising good type and health wise fowl.
Lice and Mites....

Adams flea and tick dip PLUS.... My birds go swimming at least twice a year too. They get dipped, the nesting boxes get sevin dust, the roosts get sprayed with adams or liquid sevin. The sides the coop, corners, cracks, etc get sprayed too. If I notice an parasite issue in the winter months, I dust thhe birds with sevin dust, but I prefer to give them a foot to neck dip.

Just like worming, I re-treat 7 to 10 days later. April and October tend to be my worming and dipping months.

Love it Math!

Have a great evening y'all!
Off to have homegrown roasted Marans with sweet potatoes, stuffing, gravy and veggies! Yummy!

Goodnight everyone!

We use food grade DE here. In the hen house, mixed with bedding and all the nooks, roosts, nest boxes and cracks. Its great for keeping moisture down and controlling flies. We also dust the birds thoroughly 3-4 times a year. I looked and found no lice or mites on them so I think this does a pretty thorough job without harsh chemicals.

If you have a spare half hour this video by Dr. Tom Yazwinski is well worth your time. He explains worms in detail and discusses worm resistance, along with product effectiveness. This video is geared towards beef cattle, but worms are still worms.

When I was talking to Paul Smith he recommended Frontline Spray for external parasites, in fact, he gave those I bought a spray before we loaded them. One spray just below the vent in contact with the skin.

Don, why not post this in the forum so ANYONE who has the black copper & blue copper birds can know your advice? I guess I don't understand the need to be so secretive. Please do share what you believe to be the best way to go about this. (I do not have anything other than Black Copper, but I am definitely interested in hearing, as this could benefit other breeds as well.)

I second that. I am breeding both blacks and blues also. Very much want to learn. Sorry if this information has already been posted...I am still behind and catching up on this thread.

Been reading through this thread and love all the great info. Our 10 year old son, for 4H and breeding, bought a nice rooster and has one BC chick that is just starting to feather out (I think it is a pullet). We all are just loving this breed. We will look for a few more pullets or chicks in the spring to get his flock going.

Ben and his chick.

And the buff orpingtons we got to be friends for the single marans chick.

Thanks for the compliments on the eggs. I am very happy with them.
Question about the round eggs.........anyone ever noticed slight cracking around the equatorial band on the rounder eggs vs the more regular shaped eggs? What causes this?

I have seen this on certain hen's eggs, the larger ones. I am not sure if those eggs were rounder but they certainly were bigger. I have no idea what caused it, this was earlier this spring, all the hens were together in one pen but I kept seeing an egg that looked like that and assumed it was being laid by the same hen.

Hi
Love your boy Javier, he looks very nice. Your son Ben holding his chick is cute too. My 5 year old LOVES our chickens and our Marans were his babies from eggs this year. I know he's not holding a Marans in this photo from 2011, but "Blondie" is one of his favorites

Good luck with your Marans in 4H!
