Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Wynette -

That is one cute chickie! But, I would have said the toes are lighter in color than the rest of the foot - and guessed cockerel.

Of course, the best way to tell is wait for that egg!

On another note, I'm really enjoying seeing the pics of everyones birds. I can barely keep up reading all the comments!

To be honest I believe the males has a wry tail as I see it in all the pictures. The female look very good at what I can see, nice eye color and type, If the one is cow hocked use her as an egg layer not in your breeding program.

Wynette, If you are referring to the pullets in post # 316, I wish all of my Black Copper were colored in the Hackle this way, sure would save me a lot of head ache trying to get them that way. Only my opinion but think the Hackle is great. Don

And that's what I'm talking about....everyone has a different opinion and preference. Therefore, the more input and feedback the better!

Yep, this is what I've been trying to say also - everyone sees something different and has a different preference or understanding of what is desired in this breed. We haven't even gotten started on the hens yet. Personally, I thought the copper hackle color in hens was desired, hence the name Black Copper. If I'm now finding out that it is NOT desirable then I'll have to eliminate a lot of hens when I start my "serious" breeding program. But I'm waiting for standards to be accepted first. Not to switch the subject to hens - but here's mine:

No, the copper hackle coloring in females is preferred - I just personally prefer much less of it. Like this girl (who was a bit muddy in the pic...taken last spring):

No...I have not had this issue and have not seen it, though I have heard of it. I don't know that I would say that it is necessarily due to the Bl-Cpr x Bl- Cpr. I honestly do not know, but as in every other breed of bird, unexplainable things pop up. Wish I could help.

I know, I'm having trouble reading them all, too...I have too many threads I'm subscribed to, I guess!

About that little cockerel....that was the ONLY time he was cute - he ended up to be so ugly that apparently I deleted all the juvenile pics of him in my PHotobucket account!

Nice pix Monique!!

No one is saying we don't want Copper.... Where did that come from.. please reference it... I can't seem to find it...

Pinkchick Keep an eye out for it... that was part of the undesirable affect that I didn't like about the Blue birds if I remember correctly... If you run across it and have it stick out in your mind... Let us know please... Thanks for your response anyway.

You can't tell from the picture but all but one of the hens from that hatch were quite mossy. I liked the 4mo. old better also, but so did a raccoon! It got the only hen I had planned on keeping too. But I got the raccoon, so I guess we are even.
