Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Lisa, on the pullet with lots of fluff - I think what may appear as a wing issue to you could be that all that fluff is making her look unbalanced, which sort of makes the wing carriage appear too high. I could be wrong, I'm no expert.

Quickly looking at her again, her eyes are too dark, and she runs uphill (topline). Sorry, not trying to put her down. She's definitely a healthy female - you can see the sheen in her feathers, which is a sign of good health!

What does that mean? I'm a newbie, so I'm not sure what you're saying. I got her from another Backyard Chicken user "Arielle"

Here are some links for you to look up thriftiness OR unthrifty...

From this link, you will find this quote ....

Sick or unthrifty birds will often have short, narrow, emaciated bodies and appear listless
or droopy. Small, pale combs and wattles generally indicate chronic poor health. Remove
these birds from the flock as soon as possible to avoid disease problems that may spread to
the flock

UNTHRIFTY: Term often used when raising chickens to describe unhealthy birds that are failing to thrive or won't put on weight

Lisa, The only thing I would question at all on this female is the Comb. I would test mate as I think there is something hiding . I would rather have the rear fluff than have the Gamey look. The rear fluff does not bother me unless it comes up the side by the shanks. The only thing I would check on the wing would be if it was short in length.
Oh without a doubt, I would prefer a fluffy butt to the skinny undersized gamey look.
What would you suggest test mating it to?

Lisa, This female I have talked to Zanna by pm before on whether she was good enough to breed. To be honest there needs to be a test mating about the comb made first. After the test mating this Bulky female could be bred to just about any BC male without DQs

I am curious on what you do with your spare GOOD cockerels? I have one that I can not seem to sell? (people just seem to want pairs or trios which is fine). I have decided to focus on one family and he is not related so he is the odd man out... I currently have him in the layer pen keeping the girls company. But he is too nice to be wasted, he does have excellent coppering, nice comb, etc etc I am watching the tail right now - it keeps changing as he grows. Hopefully he will have a decent to nice tail set - but so far he is better than his dad that I sold along with his family. He is nice, but I have a different bird in mind and he is not going to be able to help me - so I would rather for him to find a home with a good breeder if possible. But until then when I am feeding him, what should I do with him? I could try to find one or two pullets within his family and breed him, but again that family is not meeting my vision and I will eventually need his space.

The female Lisa had the questions on is Heath_elisha's. I do have a very similar looking pullet though, here she is, and I will be test mating her as we discussed :)
