That is Terrible! What are you going to do now? Do you think if you nailed 2 x 4 welded wire on top of the plywood roof, it would stop the raccoons from being able to enter again?Bad News today....I had built a few brooder coops last year. They were built with plywood and hardware cloth and were up a few feet off the ground. I was using them for chicks. Since I was short on space for extra roos I had been letting a few roosters stay in one of them lately. It was locked up tight and there was a blue copper marans and a key west roo that were good buddys that were in there last night. This morning we woke up to this!!!! Beware apparently racoons can chew right through a thick plywood roof!
Yeah that is the plan. I have a order in for some black pene's and am waiting on a Adult White empordanesa rooster to put with my hens. For that kind of money, I wouldn't risk shipped eggs. For that kind of money have them hatch the eggs and ship you the chicks OR make arrangements to meet them at a show to pick up the eggs / chicks.

OMG, that is so scary.... I am so sorry you had to wake up and find the tragedy.
Yes, It looks like one of my brooder units. The damage looks intense and all that damage done in ONE night makes me wonder if you were visited by a Bob Cat... It is scary because I know how close you are to me. My main problem has been foxes. That might be a good idea putting welded wire over the roof. I was thinking of putting corrugated metal/tin roofing over the plywood. Wire would be cheaper if it worked.
Lisa, I think this is one of those chick brooders I made that were similar to the ones you were making. We have the game cam and a trap set in the brooder with the remains of the poor blue copper roo in there tonight. Wish me luck! The only thing around here that I ever catch in those live traps seem to be possums, I guess they are the only things dumb enough to go in there lol.

I've had some friends that had a big ol' raccoon that dug through plywood much like yours. It ended up being a momma getting food for young ones. I've seen hardware cloth ripped up from predators as well. Any place I use hardware cloth, is not accessible to predators because of that. In place I use welded wire, which I've never had a problem with anything getting to the birds here in 30 some years. I would say that the tin would indeed be a good idea.
