I have never noticed that about the leg feathering Math.

Candling the eggs? Me....no way! Don't even try until day 18 and then I only look for clear eggs, but I can tell you that yesterday while putting everyone in lockdown and looking at the Marans egg I was able to see movement in a couple of them, which is not the norm for me. I was most excited.
Today is day 19 and by tomorrow I should be able to hear something in them with my handy dandy little stethoscope. I love using that thing.......you can hear them nip, nip nipping or you can hear the faintest little chirp. I really rely on the stethoscope after the majority of chicks have hatched to check the remaining eggs.

I have something I have to get off my mind.......regarding feathered shanks. This is in no way intended towards anyone here. It's just one of those things that makes me want to

when I hear it or see it stated.

PLEASE.... someone...... anyone........ correct me if I am wrong, but I just can't take it anymore.

Common misnomer:

"Their leg feathering will grow in as they mature."

In my pittiful experience ( 5 marans) if they did not have plenty at hatch, then they did not have plenty upon maturity.

From my limited experience what you see at hatch is what you get, sometimes you will get less as they grow and the leg feathers also molt out.

Yes......Don that is true, my whole point is that if they don't have shank feathering upon hatch........they aren't going to get it, it just doesn't grow in later.
If they have one or 2 stubs upon hatch, that is what they are going to have.......I have also seen birds with a few shank feathers loose them or the get drastically short like they aren't even there except the tiniest of a stub, I have also seen them molt out, but I have never seen a bird grow them in if they didn't have them to start with.

I witnessed people tell other people that have asked about the clean shanks when looking at chicks to purchase.....that the leg feathering indeed will grow in as they get older. I just want to jump out of my skin when I hear that.

Please excuse me if I came across crass that was not my intention.

Debbi, you were right on point, better you brought it up than myself. I just do not think it is possible for the feathers to grow out if they are not there at hatch. But again I can only go by my limited experience.

Morning Pink! I agree with you, if they ain't there, they ain't gonna be there. And in my very limited experience, just because they are born with some, doesn't mean they will stay. Like I said in a previous post, the ones here born with yellow fluff on their legs, is now gone, and either became very sparse feathering, or none at all. Something to watch for. The youngest clutch I have was born with black feathering, and at 6 weeks later is still black and pretty heavy on a few. The ones born with nothing, even though now 4 months old, STILL have NOTHING.
