Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Lisa, The Wheaten males should not have the white tail coverts at the base of the tail. It is possible to breed this white out of the Wheaten.

this is good news, I have about 7 boys and all of them have this trait and very few without it. I also found that
my wheaten boys have terrible slow growth on their tail feathers, but the ones who feathered late have less white fluff.. i was going to avoid using the
slow growers, would you advise to reconsider and give them equal consideration to whiter tail fluffers?

Today is a very exciting day...... I am building a new coop, and finally i get to separate all my varieties of marans into little groups and start worrying about my next generation... so excited i can't wait... !!!!!!

because of climate i can hatch all year without having to worry about the weather!!!

well I better get out there or i will never get that new coop !

after that i am planning to build a condo block for the boys LOL!!!

Wheaten Marans have two color traits that separate them from Black Copper Marans...

First is white fluff at the base of the wheaten marans tail.

Second color trait is on the wing. The bottom tip of the wing makes a triangle. On a wheaten it is copper / brown whereas on a black copper marans it is BLACK...

There is a world of difference in the chicks and in the hens. Only the roosters have a chance of being confused.

thank you.... also the leg color thing as well.

He is a pretty little thing isn't he?

He almost looks lavender, almost, but really looks to be a very very light blue. Does he have color leaking through on the hackle or is it just my monitor?

I wonder if he is truly a pure silver based solid blue. Wouldn't that be the icing on the cake?

I think that you should test him. :)

The first thing to do if you want to breed the white tail covert out is do not use a male that has it for breeding. Pick your breeding females that are a little darker and that have nice medium slate undercolor. If you use the white undercolor females you will have a lot of white show up in the wing and tail and also the tail coverts.

When picking our breeders sometimes and most of the time you will have to not worry too much about the SOP as it is talking about show ready fowl. Using two SOP type fowl that meets the standard does not guarantee you will get sop young. It all boils down to averages.

Kim, I looked for any other color when I caught him up to put him in the light box. I could not see anything at all. will keep a close eye and let you know if any thing shows. I can't breed back to his mother since he is from ebay eggs and they advertise they are from northeast Ohio.

If you can't figure out what to do with him when the time comes....just pack his bags and put him on the first flight out to Washington. ;)
