Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have a 12 week old that looks a lot like the chooks in the pics you have posted here. Do marans have feathers on their feet, though? I can't get a decent pic as she runs off at the sight of me.

Hi, if you are talking about my two in the box, yes they both have feathered feet, they are wheaten's and all wheaten's should have feathered shanks.
One of the pullets in the photo is 10 wks old and the other is 12 wks old, the 10 wk old one's leg feathering are as good as my 12 wks just yet but you can notice that they are feathered.

This is lovely. I hope the cuckoo pattern comes in stronger. I happen to love really good barring in a bird, not a man.

My Wheaten Marans Millie finally laid her first egg! My Blue Marans Charlotte started laying a couple weeks ago, but is 6 weeks younger! I was starting to get impatient, but her beautiful egg was well worth the wait!

Millie's egg is the one on the left, Charlotte's is the one on the right:

(This picture doesn't even do them justice!)

And Millie:
Millie is beautiful...but does she have white ear lobes ?

nice stinkeye

. Lurking and reading and (hopefully) learning. If anyone thinks the marans you have are expensive, have a look at this ad on our version of CL. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/park-ridge-south/livestock/trio-french-wheatan-maran-s/1022186506. I was gobsmacked... saw one trio for $180 yesterday, now this.

How is going down under ?I
Bet you hate the saying...I do.
I used to communicate with Lakeland and a few others on the WA thread....I remember this is your dry season.
Exactly reversed from my own season & time.
So do you have marans there yet ?
Good to see you here !

Thanks Chickielady,

Seasons depend whether you are in the north or the south of the country. South have wet season in the winter - now. North have wet in the summer.........

We do have some French Marans here, mostly wheaten, with a few BC. I have wheaten and blue wheaten. Egg colour here is pretty poor, comparatively. But that's ok, more of a challenge.:gig

And then I also NEED, not want, olive eggers............ so had to buy a couple of araucanas.:lol::lol:

Hi everyone. I'm new to chickens and this is my first BCM. Can you tell me what you think of him? Does he have too much copper color? Thanks, Dana

Hi, Dana - no, he doesn't have too much copper. Is his breast solid black? It should have no more than 10% copper feathers if it has any. From the angle of the picture, it's difficult to make a good asessment, but it appears that he's a pretty nice guy from what I can tell. His feet look like they may be light...what color are his shanks? Eye color is acceptable, but not idea. Ideally it would be a bit darker, more orange. But, that's definitely not a deal breaker, as he's within the limits of where they should be, color wise. His tail may be a bit high - again, that's difficult to tell via pictures. It should be held at a 45 degree angle. Can you get pictures taken from down at his level? From the top, straight down, so we can evaluate his frame, and from the sides, back, and front as well?

Thank you Wynette. Yes, I will make a point to take and post those pictures the way you suggested tomorrow afternoon. :)
