Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

This is my cuckoo maran (spotted) she is 6 months and my little Ameraucana Marilyn she is 5 monrths. I have never seen these two apart. They are great friends. Cuckoo is what we named the Maran because she is always doing silly things. We love her so much for the evening shows she puts on. She is quit a big bird and I can't wait for her beautiful eggs.

I have some maran chicks--splash, blue and one golden cuckoo. Is it me or do Marans fly better than other chickens? I had to put the lid on the brooder at only a few weeks. I also have one grown black copper that the breeder didn't want due to brown feathering on her neck but I think she's beautiful!

Old Hen House your Cuckoo Maran is pretty but your Ameraucana is gorgeous.
Taterdee your Maran chicks are adorable. How old are they? I have some that just hatched out today, in fact still waiting on one to hatch. I have fallen in love with my BCMs.

Thanks! When I got them she wasn't too exact on when they hatched. So around 3 weeks. :)I also got some lavender Ameraucana chicks. :) excited for all the pretty chickens running around laying beautiful eggs!

I hate to do this because the answer might be in the 4643 pages in this thread... I'll never find it! I have a BCM cock and a flock of white Marans... any idea what color they might produce?

that will depend....are the white Marans recessive white (most common) or dominate white (not common). recessive white will notbexpress in the chicks unless both parents carry recessive white. if they are dominate white ALL the chicks will be white with leakage.

now having said all that about white you have NO IDEA what colors were used to make your whites.....they could be blue black cuckoo...who knows. the cross of the two is not a good cross and would not produce any usable birds for breeding. my guess is you just want more Marans for more dark eggs and are not worried about breeding them down the road.

Thank you for the answer... you are correct about just really wanting eggs now but I don't want to breed a mess... so I'll look for BCM pullets or selll him... I got the whites from a pretty good source and he was accidently included with some Ameraucanas. Both breeds are just for pretty eggs right now but I might get serious about one of them in the future... depending on how they develop. I do have white cockerels so I don't need the BCM... he's just so pretty I wanted to find a reason to keep him.

If a person looks at the leg color of the male photo'd in this ad, we will see that the male has yellow legs. Yellow legs are not a trait of pure Marans. If it is seen on the bird, it is because there has been an outcross somewhere in the birds parental history or lineage. If we also take a look at the overall build of the bird we will see that he is pretty gamey looking (ask yourself if he resembles any of the other breeds of birds photo'd)...again not something that is a trait of pure Marans.
Another thing to mention, and please keep in mind that I am not an expert, but I have been breeding the Blue Copper, Splash Copper and Black Copper Marans for 5 years and have never seen this kind of coloring on a male Splash Copper Marans. It is my opinion (for what ever it is worth) that these birds of not of pure Marans....too many tell tale signs that shows a person differently.
