Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Wynette,

I don't know if it's the pic or what, but he looks to me like he has a short, stocky neck too. Maybe it's the way he's standing? Afterall, you've had him in your hands, so you would know!

Edited to add....
opps I lost track of the thread you were talking about Wynette's roo not mine!
....

No I am sure his (my roo) neck is short. Even when he crows it looks short

. I'm just not sure if he actually has a flat back, or if I'm just not getting a good photo of him. Oh well, it probably is flat and I will accept that as a fault. Is it too much of a fault to try to breed out?

Either way... do you think he's worth keeping to hatch some bcm chicks, or should I just let him put size into my barnyard mutt chicks? Like I said I am hopping for some nice greenfire juveniles soon and I could just use one of those males for breeding........or come spring I plan on getting some of Wynettes hatching eggs and I really look forward to that!

Holy eggs! I've never seen anything like that!

I just wanted to show off the first egg laid by one of my 5 newest FBCM pullets. I'm thinking that once she gets her spray painter primed, these are going to be extra nice!

Wynette, Will give you my take on a Marans with a flat back on the Male. If you have a nice broad chested bird with broad back this will lower the front end a little causing the back to level off some. The proposed Standard only calls for the back to have a slight incline from the top of the shoulders. On the length of neck the standard only calls for a medium length, here again if the front is developed it will drop a small amount causing the neck to look short.
If the male does not have white in tail or wing or neck undercolor I would be glad to have one like him to use with my females. A test mating would show real quick if he was going to transfer anything.

Don, I understand what you're saying, and appreciate the feedback! Yes, all that makes sense. You do have a good way of describing things (your hinged 2x4 analogy regarding the pinched tail was super helpful to me as well). Unfortunately, this guy did develop a white tail feather and a white wing feather, which is why he's now gone. Darnit anyway. I was SO hoping he'd be a keeper. Oh well.

Wynette, I have culled so many males and females this year that it may restrict the amount of single mating I can do . I am in the process of making some trap nest so I can pen mate some Black Copper and make do this year with what I have , Surely next year I should have less culls unless some new ones come along.
It is really weird I do not have all these faults with the Wheaten.

I can't remember who wanted to see the young black copper cockeral that hatched from my avatar egg from Cheepa but I was able to get a few pics of him. He is gonna be a big boy lol. There were two others that were from her eggs as well they are both blue copper males. One is a darker and one is lighter copper blue.
