Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Debbi, that is EXACTLY what those holes look like - as if a huge calcium deposit was on the egg, and in the efforts made by the hen to push that bad boy out, the calcium deposit got pushed into the egg. You can actually see the hunk of calcium deposit in the major close-up pic.

Hey! I found the double holed one:

And here's a different one (obviously egg stuff fascinates me):

That is really crazy looking but kinda cool too.
Here is a pic of my wierd egg that I was getting for awhile. It was a gelatinous egg with a thin shelled harder egg inside. It was a marans egg, from a blue copper pullet. She lays totally normal dark eggs now.

Here it is after I cut the gelatin thing open. What's really gross was after I did that this silver laced wyandotte who was free ranging at the time, ran up and grabbed the gelatinous thing and ran off with it and ate it !!

:sickYou are trying to gross us out, aren't you?

Some days I see my animals do so many gross things it makes me wonder why I keep and feed them all!

Then they do the cute stuff.

That IS one WIERD egg:eek:

Hi, guys...sorry I've not been around in a few days. Just uber swamped at work.

I've had two that lay exactly like this and, in fact, even got one egg with TWO holes in it. I have some pics...

Thought I had one of the egg with two holes, but couldn't find it.

This egg is laid about every 15 eggs by this hen; the other hen I had that laid them was from the same line. I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but I always find them interesting! The hole doens't go all the way, so I just either cook these for the chickens or eat them myself.

Y'all are posting the weirdest-looking eggs I have ever seen. I have over 300 birds representing over a dozen breeds and I've never seen anything like those eggs. Does the hole go all the way through like it looks like it does and if so, what keeps the yolk/insides from falling out of the egg - through the holes?????

To me, it looks more like they are melted into the egg - like someone took a hot poker to the shell before it hardened and cauterized it.

Debbi,

Glad you made it with little damage other than to your nerves. We got hit last night and today. High winds, trees swaying, sheets of pouring rain. Last night thunder and lightning. I made it through, no big problems. Saw some weird dark cloud formations...But all is well!

Take care,

Dave

Dave,

Glad you guys made it through too! Wind here today was awful. I forecasted a "Small Chick Warning", and the chicklets had to stay inside. They were not happy, but I thought it better than trying to pull them off the welded wire fenced roof of the run!
