Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Oh my goodness, surprise color in some chicks.

I put my Blue Tailed Buff rooster with the weird genetics with my only Cuckoo hen. Since I had no female for him or male for her, I just stuck them together.

I put several of their eggs in an incubator, which hatched yesterday. I just pulled all the chicks out of the hatcher that hatched yesterday, and several of those cuckoo eggs hatched. A couple of the chicks are blue, but there are also a couple of chocolate ones! Of course they might not stay that color, but it will be interesting to see what happens.

I'll take pics later. I hope the color will show up in the pics.
Here's a chocolate chick. What do you make of it? I looked up chocolate genetics and it's a sex-link recessive. Which means the rooster could be split chocolate, and chocolate chicks would be female. The place the rooster came from might be doing some color experimenting, which could explain the weird genetics in the rooster. He might not be pure Marans, although he looks like he is.

If these are pullets and if they stay chocolate, I'll put them back with their daddy and see what happens.

Hi guys!! I have two Marans, and I'm wondering if you can help me tell the gender on one of them. One is obviously a cockerel but the other I'm not sure, I'm thinking she's a pullet but would like the experts opinions :) It feathered out MUCH faster than its brother.

Age? Looks like a pullet but sometimes they can be tricky. I know that's not much help but I'd bet on pullet.

Ok everyone, it's the pullet or cockerel game lol. I need help with my Luna. She (hopefully) had only recently developed a comb and wattles and until about a week ago I had no doubt that she was a pullet but now I'm second guessing myself. She's a big girl. A little help from the experts is in order. She's 8 weeks old and her very obvious sister had almost no comb still but her two brothers have bigger and redder combs than her. She has no copper coloring on her at all but is about as big as her one brother. Definitely a tricky one.

Luna is the one on the left. Her brother, Blue is in the right and her brother Joel is in the background.

Here's a side picture of her. Blue and Joel are always facing of to each other, hackles raised and pecking but Luna never does. So please tell me your opinions. Pullet or Cockerel?

At eight weeks, I would be expecting coloring in a cockerel.....but that comb popping up and the size lead me to wonder about Luna being a late blooming cockerel....so my vote is

I would give it a couple of weeks to see if coloring develops.

Likely one of those "Don't Eat Me!" cockerels. They can only hide for so long...

Hi everyone I am new to your thread. :) I do not currently have Marans but I am interested in adding some Chocolate egg layers to my assortment of chickens. I have heard many differences in opinion on which Marans are the better of the breed. I love the French color and the blue. I have kids and I read that the roosters are aggressive is that true? I wanted to come to the experts before I buy any chicks.

Thank you
