Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yellow skin is recessive and takes 2 copies to express Marans shouldn't have yellow skin it is not a sex link trait so the fact that they are roos is just dumb luck.
Oh great, another recessive to worry about...

Whew, thanks! I am sure they are both hens (I have one that is older) but the older one is going through a darker feathering stage and along with that it concerned me. She does have no comb to speak of so I am hoping it's just darker feathers than normal (I did a search and someone else had that happen, too)

Just picked up 2 so so so sweet / cute Blue Copper Marans today. One is Blue the other is black. This week I will be hatching out 2 more Blue Coppers and Wheaten's.

Hello everyone! Would you please critic these two cockerels?

I'm very think skinned so don't worry about me taking offense. I am new to Marans and just want to know if these boys have any sort of potential in a breeding program.

I posted these pics on a different site and got a several comments about the lack of copper on my chicks. I verified with the breeder and confirmed that the set of eggs I got from her were NOT coppers! She doesn't breed coppers. I hatched 9 Splash Marans eggs and 7 BBS Marans (not copper) from her. The other set of eggs I bought were BBS copper marans from a different guy, but I only had 1 hatch out of that batch of shipped eggs: the blue boy in the pics :-(

Is it advisable to mix the copper and non-copper blacks and splashes to get coppers or would it be better to go with the 1 black boy over my 5 non-copper splash girls to get blues? I am not going to breed the blue, he's hideous.

Would like some opinions about this 8-10 week old BCM pullet. I'm wondering about her back and tail angles. She is fairly relaxed; standing natural in this shot but wasn't cooperative for more ;=) She is too dark, she does have feathering all the way down the outside toe, some have been picked at. thanks!

Mystery chick!

The eggs I set were from the following two matings:

1.
Blue-Tail Buff Marans roo
Cuckoo Marans hen

2.
Trio of Black Copper Marans

I've been hatching from those two matings for months, and if anyone was split for white, it would have had to have showed up before now.

So where did this white chick come from?

I would guess that your BCM Cock carries the recessive white or wheaten gene and one or more of the pullets.

Ok everyone, it's the pullet or cockerel game lol. I need help with my Luna. She (hopefully) had only recently developed a comb and wattles and until about a week ago I had no doubt that she was a pullet but now I'm second guessing myself. She's a big girl. A little help from the experts is in order. She's 8 weeks old and her very obvious sister had almost no comb still but her two brothers have bigger and redder combs than her. She has no copper coloring on her at all but is about as big as her one brother. Definitely a tricky one.

Luna is the one on the left. Her brother, Blue is in the right and her brother Joel is in the background.

Here's a side picture of her. Blue and Joel are always facing of to each other, hackles raised and pecking but Luna never does. So please tell me your opinions. Pullet or Cockerel?

ok, I asked this a few weeks ago and do I'm checking back in now. I'm still confused lol. Luna is now 11.5 weeks old (I'll try to get an updated picture up later if my signal cooperates). Still, not a crow out of her (hopefully) while her two brothers are crowing away. Her comb has grown more along with good sized wattles. Still absolutely no sign of copper coloring in the hackles at all and she still doesn't take part in battles the two obvious boys have. I did pull apart her feathers this morning on her back to check the pin feathers coming in and there were a few copper ones coming in but very little. Can a hen have coppering on her back? Still no copper coloring at all in the pin feathers on the hackles. The boys are already stand offish and no longer like to be touched or held but Luna will gladly come over to be loved on and will roost on my arm. Like I said, I'm try to get some pictures up in a little bit but my signal is horrible so it may not work.
