Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Is this guy a marans? Or marans mix? Or can we tell? He is recovering from scaly leg mites and his nice foot feathers are just starting to grow back in... but here he is.

I hatched him, but I got the eggs from a guys mixed flock...various hens including BCM all presided over by a black and a blue copper Marans rooster. He did hatch from a very dark egg, but the guy also had barnevelder hens and welsummers... so... I don't know what he is. He isn't black like a black copper, but he isn't blue enough to be a blue copper. Could he be the product of a blue copper father and black copper mother? Or something else entirely? His skin is black, his feet are feathered. All I know is I love his comb and wattles. Very impressive.

Well, they sure don't look like any kind of Marans I've ever seen! The rest of their hatchmates look perfectly normal...either black or blue coppers...in fact, I've got one absolutely gorgeous little blue pullet that I'll put up a pic of later. Right now, I'm just trying to figure out what the heck these kids are! LOL

So The Lone Ranger is just 6 days old. BUT .. its killing me to know what I have.. does anyone have a thought ?
It is a CHICK! If you are asking us to feather sex it, it is too old for that and you can't feather sex unless it is breed for. You can randomly breed chickens and then feather sex them.

NO its a Wheaten... I will know for sure in a few weeks. I just was hoping someone had a good eye and thought to guess.

WHO KNOWS?? My guess would be either EE or Olive Egger but even a Marans can produce yellow legs.... it is recessive.  Not all EE have beards and muffs..... even Olive Eggers can have beards and muffs.  You will just have to wait and see what color egg you get.
My little Maran mix is starting to get feathers on it's legs!
