Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Quote: The girl in your Avatar she is the mixed one right? She has yellow legs. yellow legs are recessive and the Marans that was breed to make her carries it so I would still be cautious about breeding them. If you want to breed them check and see if they carry it. You can breed them to a bird with yellow legs and if you get ANY chicks with yellow legs they carry it and should not be breed. It is very hard to remove yellow legs once in the flock.

Yes, she has yellowish legs. Sometimes they actually look kinda greenish lol. I'll keep an eye out for that. I was thinking of breeding her possibly with Blue some time (just for layers). I think they could possibly make a really neat splash. But if I get any yellow legs then I'll know Blue carries it. I'll watch close for it. I don't plan on doing a lot of breeding. At least not anytime in the near future but I know now to keep an eye out for it. Princess was just given to me from the breeder because she was a mix so I don't know if he was checking for the yellow leg issue or if there was just an accident. Who knows.

So, my blues are 22 weeks old and we have not seen eggs or any signs of laying readiness except the combs are a bright red. When did any one else's start laying?

My Marans have generally laid around 24-25 weeks, but if their combs are bright red, it shouldn't be much longer.

I'm trying not to freak out. My 3 week old Wheaten Marans chick's wing feathers are curling. I have never seen anything like this. My other Marans , Black, and Blue Coopers are smooth to their body. This little cockerel also does not have his tail feathers in yet.. BUT the curling concerns me... I ordered eggs from a breeder who sounded pretty good.
