Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I lost 2 of my 3 beloved marans this winter. I don't have any breeders near me. I have a local farm that has marans mixed in with others. Anyone able to recommend where I should order a few from? Thank you

What type of Marans are you looking for?

I had the bcm. But I like them all. I also had one splash and she was our favorite!
Frasier Creek Farm has a great line of Black Coppers. He just picked up some eggs from Bev Davis herself. If you're looking for Black Coppers w/ dark eggs these are great.

Slate Creek Farm in CA has Golden Cuckoo's with good egg color

Kelly Powers (who can be found on fb) has a great line of regular Cuckoos. I'm buying a bunch of chicks from her, she's in Ohio.

I have Birchens with great egg color, but I don't think the eggs would ship well so far and I would have to check on the laws of shipping live chicks into MA

As for splash, I've never looked into them

If you have them shipped, I would recommend buying live birds. I've had really bad results having eggs shipped to me. Even when they were within CA.

Good luck!

One of these days I'll get the knack of taking egg pics that show the color accurately. The pics always come out too dark or too light. I play around with the lighting but I just can't get it right. But even if I get the pics to look right on my monitor, they might not show accurately on other peoples' monitors.

Not really cloudy but overcast. No direct sun, no shade. I try to take pictures with the card for color too. helps to show color no matter the light. If they have a card and can say those eggs match #6 then they can look at the card and see the real color.

It's overcast today, so I took some BCM eggs outside and I think I got this pretty accurate, at least on my monitor.

With my Penedesenca I have often noticed they have darkened some the first week then hold there color pretty steadily.

My BCM eggs are DEFINITELY getting darker since a week ago when they decided to start laying. 2 of the ones I got today are even darker than any of the eggs in the pic above. I am doing the happy dance!
